Need something faster than my beloved G3
I'm looking to upgrade my old beloved G3. Its focus is not capable of keeping up to my toddler (no more still life for me!) One of the features I love about my camera is the fast lens. I'm not aware of any other "prosumer" cameras with f2.0 lenses..

So, a short list of features I'm looking for:.

Fast lensFast focusNo larger than a G3 (so no SLR).

I'd also be interested in full-motion video (720x486 29.97fps) but it wouldn't be a deal breaker..

Thanks for your advice!..

The G7 is very good - I'm sure the G9 is equal..

I just moved up to a 40D, but sometimes use the G7 when I want a quick and easy shot..

Have fun...

1. Consider Casio ones like Casio EX-V7/V8. These are fastest focusing among compacts. However low-light performance is not that good..

2. Fuji F40fd or F50fd (image-stabilization, A/S modes). Both focus fast. F40fd has better low light performance too. These two have one of best lens (sharp).unityco wrote:.

Well if you like the G3 then the G9 is an obvious upgrade. I have had my G2 for many years and have been very happy with it, but am now looking for an upgrade as well and the G9 looks to be the way to go..

The G9 has a RAW mode which I don't think the G7 supported, if that is important for you. I know that I could alway get a lot more out of the G2 RAW files than the JPGs..

Thanks for all the suggestions. My only concern with the G9 is the slower lens... has anyone found it to be a great difference? (I'm really not sure how much difference .8 makes.)..

Well it has IS, so that should be a compensation to give you the equivalent of 2 extra stops?Pixcellence Wedding Photographer Londonhttp://www.pixcellence.co.uk..

If I understand it correctly, the difference is substantial, regarding light: At f/2, a lens would let in twice the light that it would at f/2.8, I think. It's not so much a ".8" difference, but rather, a "one-stop" difference..

I imagine the IS makes up for some of the loss in lens speed, though. I haven't tried a G9 yet, but presently have a G5. I like the overall look and feel of the G9, and image quality in reviews seems pretty good for such a pixel-dense small chip..

Also, don't forget the other major difference from your G3 no swivel screen on the G9. If you never use it, then there's no problem, but some folks really dig the swivel..

As much as I love my G3, I know that most everything is faster than it is!STOP Global Stasis! Change is good!.

Now that you've judged the quality of my typing, take a look at my photos..http://www.photo.net/photos/GlenBarrington..

Thanks, I kinda thought that would be the case. Someone on another forum recommended a used G6... any opinions on that here?..

You are only talking about a 1 stop difference with most similar cameras - at the wide end anyway. Low light capabilities have improved (magapixel for megapixel !)since the G3 was released so I would not lament the passing of the faster lens. However, the G9 at 12Mp has great IQ but is noisy in comparison to some of the better 7 - 8 Mp compacts such as the Fuji F40. But you probably want something with manual controls and RAW so thats the delima!.

Cheers..
