Need help on new Camera Nikon P5100 vs Lumix DMC-TZ5
Hi Everyone, I am trying to decide on getting a new camera. I am leaning towards a somewhat compact camera that's easy to carry with good pictures. I did some research, and have narrow down to two....(if there are better ones, please recommend me too).

They are.

Nikon P5100http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikonp5100/.

Lumix DMC-TZ5http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonictz5/.

So do you pros have any comments on these too? On their picture qualitys? Pros and Cons? Please let me know, my budget is 250~400..

I don't have any direct experience with the nikon you are looking at. However, I do own a TZ3, the predecessor to the TZ5, and I'm very happy with this camera. It is a great travel camera because of it's size and it's zoom range 28-280mm. In comparing these too cameras, you might consider the following:.

1. If you want wideangle and telephoto, the TZ5 is probably a better choice. The P5100 only goes from 35-123mm. I probably could live without the extra telephoto reach of the TZ5, but I find the 28mm wideangle especially useful for landscapes, architecture (inside & outside shots), and group photos..

2. One thing I miss in my TZ3 is a viewfinder. I've gotten used to using the LCD for framing the shot, but I prefer a viewfinder. The P5100 has one. Since I've never used the P5100, I can't say how accurate it is. I have a Canon SD800 pocket camera, with an optical viewfinder ...

It all depends on what your priorities are ....

Good luck ....

Simon.

I use nikon SLRs, but am mostly lukewarm on their compacts. I think the TZ series from panasonic are killer though. Only downside is they don't give a ton of manual control...

Slow performance. small zoom. May consider if you want manual modes, hot shoe and high resolution. May also consider Canon A720IS..

Lumix DMC-TZ5http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonictz5/.

Good travel camera and camcorder rolled into one. But lacks A/S/M modes..

Consider Canon SX100IS (10x), A720IS or Panasonic FX500 (5x, ultra-compact) too which have those..

Among the two TZ5 for it's zoom range, better movie mode.Best Wishes, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612Thanks for your time...

I see.. i'm taking a look at the.

Canon SX100IS... but it looks kinda bulky...which of these you recommended has a better picture??..

SX100IS -(4.3 x 2.8 x 1.9 in)P5100 - (3.9 x 2.6 x 1.6 in)A720IS - (3.8 x 2.6 x 1.7 in)Therefore the difference in size is not as much as it appears..

I would go for SX100IS which has one of the USPs of such compacts i.e. big Zoom range. It has A/S/M modes too. IQ wise it is at par with others (and slightly better than Panasonic at higher ISOs)..

The sx100 is a nice camera, not much bigger, if any than the tz5 (just shaped differently) but it doesn't go very wide. I prefer the panny...
