Need help on memory cards for Powershot A80
Because I will be using movie mode often enough, I'm wondering as to what kind of CompactFlash card I need? I'm looking to buy a 1 GB card, so any suggestions to a great brand for CompactFlash cards would be awesome. Also, I'm assuming that getting the new higher speed cards would be necessary in order to record at the maximum fps and resolution of the camera. Please point me out if I'm wrong. But if I am, would it still be beneficial to have this high speed card, if only to take the pictures slightly quicker because of the higher write speed? Thanks in advance...

Personally, if shooting movies, I would buy a decent digital camcorder. This will give you long term benefit and no hassle of memory cards, which are more suitable for photographs..

Thanks for the input, but it doesn't answer my question. Should I stick with either Kingston, Lexar, or Sandisk? Cause I found a great deal on a really fast 1GB card for $190 and it's 45x, listed at And I'm leaning towards this one, reviews all are excellent. Only thing is that haven't heard of the company...

Can someone please give an answer regarding the speed rating and the card that I posted the link to? I would like to order one soon since my camera is coming within the next day or two...

I just got the A80 and the same Transcend card you listed. They work perfectly fine together. At best quality settings (i.e., largest image size), you have something like 476 shots available. That rocks. I admit to being disappointed by the A80. I'm hoping it's "pilot error," but for the life of me I'm disappointed by it's general sluggishness getting focused.

And many more than usual are blurry. I do not think this is a lemon camera, but I am concerned that I expect too much out of this model. I'm somewhat disappointed by it's image quality (I do a lot of Photoshop work in my job, and resolution is a *good* thing), and largely bothered by it's performance. I'd appreciate your feedback if you find it enjoyable. I find it frustrating.

Well so far, I've just been dinking around with it. I have noticed the focus time that you mention, but I think that's an inherit trait of this camera, as I know everyone always mentions this about the A80. As for quality, I have taken some shots, but haven't put them on the PC yet. But from the LCD, they seemed pretty good. I'll try to post some as soon as I can. However, so far I like in every aspect as compared to my old Canon EOS ELAN 35mm.

The movie mode I also like very much, and it looks to be better than I thought it would be...

Note that the A80 only supports FAT16 (if I am right). So memory (in fact: disc) size will be limited to 2 GB. See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 118335.

The speed of the CF card is not important, I have read somewhere that the A80 is the limiting factor. Same applies for the USB interface, which is USB1.1...

The A80 does indeed support both FAT16 and FAT32 formats. My CF card is formatted as FAT32 and works as expected. If I use the camera to format the memory card, it uses FAT16...
