My first DSLR, help me choose
After some years using point and shoot (Canon S1 IS and S2 IS), I want to jump to an SLR. I have a budget of about $800-900, and I plan to use the camera for general use (no sports or macro), although I really like a good zoom lens..

One option is a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi at $499 in, with a Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3, at about $400 in Amazon. What do you think?Thanks..

I think Best Buy had a pretty good deal for an XTi with kit lens, plus a zoom lens (something to 300mm), for like $700....

I personally just got a XSi for $900 cause it fits my hands better, plus a few other things...

I'd get a Nikon D40 with an 18-200 Nikon VR zoom. You'll have vibration reduction and you'll probably need it with 200mm..

Or, get the 2 lens D40 Kit with the 18-55mm and the 55-200vr lens for $598

The new D60 with with the 18-55vr and the 55-200vr lens for $828, but I'd stick with the wonderful D40...

Just thought of something, I would think handling comfort to be my #1 priority, because diff camera (even from the same brand) all feels different. Make sure the weight, size, feel are perfect...

There is little difference between the Canon XTi and the Nikon D40?..

I know a good deal for you...A friend is only one argument away.....

Try holding a few candidates (cameras) in a store. The feel of the camera, buttons, menus etc is VERY important in your decision making, if it doesn't feel comfortable in your hands, you will not be inclined to use it as much, and then consequently not enjoy it and photography as much. Do not underestimate the importance of this factor..

Good luck!.

Imho, there are many good entry-level cameras out there. If you choose the mainstream canon/nikon brands, you will pay for the brand..

There are other options that are as good as nikon/canon. When I decided to buy a dslr, I went to a shop and "tested" many options. At that time I chose the Konica-Minolta 7D, since it felt right in my hands and it was the first to have in-body image stabilisation. This feature is (for me) very important and it is in many brands (not in canon/nikon cameras). I have had the KM7D for almost 4 years now and I have not regrets of my choice..

Today I would chose the Sony line (the A700 is the successor of the KM7D), but that is just my taste..

All the best,.

There's a pretty big megapixel difference - 10 (XTi) vs. 6 (D40). Personally, I think the D40 is a little too limited for the purpose of making things easy but if you really want to learn the ins and outs of photography I would go with the XTi or for Nikon, the D80 - which should drop in price soon. If not, the D60 is a better choice over the 40..

I suggest you read the review on the D40 on this site. As the sensor is of such a quality, it performs as shap as the canon. Why pay for 4mp that do absolutely nothing..

I would go for the D40 and pay for a quality lens..

+1 for trying them out first. I thought initially that I wanted the XSi but it just did not fit my hands at all. Tried a bigger camera like the Sony A350 and it was a perfect fit. Still deciding on a couple different models but you really do need to handle them...
