Make your own gray card?
Would it be easy to make your own gray card?.

For example, use some image program and use this or that shade of gray and then just print it?..

Just use a white piece of paper. As long as it is neutral (not warm or cool in color), it should be fine...

If it is to check your white balance, then white is fine..

If you want to meter a scene with a spot meter, then you should have a 12% gray cardhttp://www.bythom.com/graycards.htmnot a Kodak 18% gray cardhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_card.

It's not so critical. As long as you know what to expect from the grey card (or whatever) it will do. You can even use the palm of your hand if you've worked out beforehand what the reading means..

The human hand, regardless of race tends to be one stop lighter than neutral density gray. Green grass tends to be dead on..

Make sure your hand or grass are in the same light as the subject. For example, if you are shooting the underside of a bird in flight, metering off green grass with the sun shining on it will not be correct because the underside of a bird is in the shade. Metering off your hand in the shade would be better, then opening up a stop. If you pay attention to light and have a basic understanding of the Zone System, you'll have no problem..

Personally, I shoot 95% of the time only with my in-camera spot meter, but that's just me..

Cheers, Craig..

Actually, Andrew, I visited your gallery and have much admiration for your quality of work..

In this topic however, although we can rationalise your decisions, white is white and black is black and when the two meet, it is grey..

Craig, thanks for the tip. I will give it a try next time when I am shooting and if I am desperate..

They say you can sell anything if you can convince people that regardless of skin colour, they are all gray..
