Low Light performance Canon 450D Vs Nikon D60
Hi, I've been reading alot about ISO and sensor size etc. I'm trying to make up my mind about which camera to buy. This is going to be my first dslr. At the moment I have the Canon Powershot S2 IS. It's not bad for outdoors in very good light, but when it comes to indoor it fails miserably. I'm currently doing alot of indoor shots and using the flash creates ugly shadows..

These are the points I can't decide on:.

1) As far as I know the Nikon D60 does not have live view and therefore does not have live histogram view. Right?.

2) Canon 450D has more pixels crammed into the same size sensor so Nikon D60 should (theoretically) come out on top regarding high ISO. Right? (Unless Canon have better technology at reducing noise)..

If I remember correctly I came across a link comparing 4 or 5 cameras at high ISO and the Canon 450D seemed to be slightly better (that is if I remember correctly). Does anyone know of any other comparisons?.

Any help would be appreciated!Thanks..

Not really. Canon retains it's reputation for low noise and from what I've seen and read still sems to be very slightly ahead with the 450D. Very little in them though in the real world..

Both are very good cameras, but the Canon has more features, some useful, and nudges slightly ahead for image quality. Logically, that's the one to go for, but there may be other factors involved like price and personal preference..

Both are going to be very good in the IQ department. In real world situations (printing, normal viewing) rather than pixel peeping, I doubt you would see any meaningful difference in noise (and for pixel peeping, I can't recall which wins)..

The D60 does not have live view, so no live histogram. Frankly, the live view on the Xsi is very clunky and I think it would be very frustrating for anything but static scenes on a tripod. I'd go handle both and see what you like. The Canon has a fuller set of features (apart from live view) the nikon has, in my hands, slightly better ergonomics and is substantially cheaper. You could bundle it with a 55-200 vr in addition to the kit lens and it is still 50 bucks cheaper than the canon...

If live view is of real interest then you should look at the sony A350. There is a very good comparison between 350 and 450 in this weeks Amateur Photographer which may help your choice..

If IQ is really important then you could also consider the D40. Awesome for just 6 mp..

Check out the handling - this for me was extremely important so I bought the D80!..

Thanks for your input people. I managed to find the ISO comparisons..

Seems like 450D is slightly ahead. Still not fully decided if I'm putting my money on Canon though, because Nikon is a bit cheaper. Having said that I am swaying in Canons direction at the moment..

Thanks again!..

Do not rule out the D40 if Live View is not a top priority.

Very happy with my D60 you can't go wrong with this camera. When I tried them both out I liked the feel and layout of the buttons on the D60 better but you need to go hold them both and see which one you like. I am sure you would be happy with either choice.
