Looking for some advice....
Just recently our old Powershot A470 died and I started to browse this forum about 2 weeks ago for some ideas. I haven't looked for a digital camera in quite some time..

Main picture taking We have two young active kids and getting more and more active. We'd like todo a better job of capturing that.- General outdoor scenery while traveling.- General indoor family pictures..

Camera requirements- 200-$225- We aren't the type to always have a camera with us, but need to do better atcapturing some great pics..

- Pocketable is not a high priority as we do not always carry it around; however,we see the benefit of having a smaller one..

Cameras researched Canon A720 - very nice and good size. Actually has a pretty good grip handle. However, it would be fun to have something a little different since we used tohave the A470.- Fuji F40fd.

- Canon 850IS. I noticed Amazon lists it for 229. Our local Costco has it for 250and includes the Canon MP740 printer. The printer isn't something we hadinitially looked for, but could use a replacement printer for our very old HP athome. Seems like a half decent package. I could probably sell it if we wantedto..

Anyway, looking forward for any input. Thanks...

I find having a wider lens very handy. Most digital cameras start at about 35mm equivalent. The Canon SD870IS starts at 28mm. Much better for landscapes, architecture, and groups of people..

Canon still makes the best P&S cameras. However, the SD870IS is about $260. The A720IS and SX100IS are nice, but give up the wide angle for longer telephoto...

I have the Fuji F45fd, which is the same as the F40fd. Solid performer, but a little cranky to master. For a simple change of pace from Canon also take a look at Olympus Stylus and Panasonic FS5 and FS20..

Canon is a great brand and nothing wrong with their P&S cameras; early to implement stabilization, good build quality, solid electronics, easy to use, etc., but otherwise average in terms of lens sharpness, noise levels, color rendering, focus speed and macro capabilities. Where I'm most disappointed with Canon is how late they are getting wide angle lenses into their P&S cameras and their video quality and features are about 5 years behind Casio, Samsung, and Panasonic, all three of which produce 28mm, 24mm and 25mm lenses, respectively..

Of course, I'm speaking in general terms. Some high end Canon P&S models are very sharp (e.g. G9), but their line of cameras does not stand out as being sharper than the rest...

I was all set to buy the Canon 870is, but then today an alert from popped into my inbox. has the Casio ex-z1080 on clearance for $125 with store pick up..

Granted it may not be in the same class as the Canon, but have received some decent reviews. In addition, it was just too good of a deal to pass for our needs..

I was going crazy trying to decide on a P & S, but this finally sealed it for me..

I have an A70. Mine has broke several times. I keep sending it back to canon and they keep fixing it for free..

I think they got sued over it and it's got an extra long warranty. They connections on the sensor get loose and the pictures get all purple funky and black with horizontal lines. They even paid for the shipping. Worthwhile to keep as a backup, you know, for the times it works..
