Looking for a new camera
Hello everyone, I am new to the forums and have looked through the site at some reviews of digital cameras and had some questions prior to purchasing a camera. I am looking for a camera that will be used for vacations and also some low-light photography. I am a beginner in photography and understand some about iso settings and stuff, but have a lot to learn. My question for everyone here is what would be a good camera in the $300-450 price range with a min or 10x optical zoom...The camera that I was looking at was the Sony DSC-H9 w/ Nightshot. But I am very open to other cameras in this price range, what do you guys recommend? Is SLR worth the difference in price? Thanks in advance and any help that you can give would greatly be appreciated. Jeff..

Just a suggestion, but if you're new to photography and digital photography consider getting a Fuji Finepix A900 or A820 or whatever the 6mp equivalent is You can get them about $150 US And if you use it for a couple of months, you will see just what it is you're really going to want. My Kid got something like an A600 or A500 that she uses for work (before and after pictures for plastic surgery) Says it works fine. My wife got one that she really likes. Her main comment is that she doesn't have to worry about it because she consideres that if it breaks then can get a new one cheaper than she can repair an expensive one. I've been into Canon SLRs since the '60s, but I started in digital with Nikon coolpix 4300. It didn't take long to decide that was't what I wanted and got a Canon powershot pro 1- 11,000 images later I've decided that I want a DSLR - the point and shoot is just too frustrating in image quality, speed and light requirements I'm looking at a NIKON D300 when they come out. I'm rambling, but the point is if you start with something was cheap as you can, then you will discover what's important to you and won't make a big mistake or tie up too much money in getting something that you don't like...

Hello and thank you for the reply, I consider myself a beginner in photography, but I have done some int he past my current camera is a Kodak 4mp DX6490, which has a 10x optical zoom I believe, I am looking for an upgrade for that. I do not want to spend the $150 on a camera and then be sorry that I wasted money on it since I will need to upgrade the get the quality I want...I would much rather spend the 400 or so and be happy with the camera. I know I want a mega zoom type camera, I will be using it on vacation, which will most likely be a cruise, and I really like to take pictures from balcony of the ship as we approach islands. The Kodak did an excellent job, but it is now time for an upgrade. Sorry if I mislead you with my prior post, I guess I should of mentioned my prior camera experience...

Sorry I misunderstood. I was assuming NO experience. I'd suggest a Canon Powershot S5IS http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons5is/That seems to be what you've described as what you're looking for..

You ask whether DSLR is worth it? That depends on you. I would say not until your P&S won't take the pictures you want to take. It's a big world with DSLR - I've pre-ordered my first one, but that's after a number of P&S and borrowing a friend's DSLR. Moving to a DSLR is a big jump in cost and learning. Is there a visual difference - there sure can be. Is it worth it? Each has to decide for themselves.

I would offer the camera I've been using for the last two years or so, the Nikon Coolpix 8800. It's lens is far larger than most, capable of letting in more light. It has a 10x optical range, has VR (vibration reduction) and I've shot it a wide range of situations and have for most of it's life been very satisfied with the results. In truth, there are a lot of fine P&S cameras available. Consider the reviews here, then choose one that seems to best suite your needs, then don't look back. If you get a couple or three or more years from it, then it will have been worth the fun factor all those years..

Cheers!..

Has anyone had any experience with the panesonic Fz250?..

It has the best 12x zoom around (sharp, minimal distortion & fringing problems). However you will have to shoot Raw and post process images to get best possible IQ. For best out-of-camera JPGs, Canon SX100 offers terrific value (8MP, 10x zoom with I.S., full manual modes, good IQ at higher ISOs, sharp lens)..
