Looking for a compact P&S that takes quality pics and is tough!
I "had" a Canon SD750 for about 2 1/2 years and it pretty much served the purpose but last week I went for a hike and to make a long story short I sat it on a rock. it fell and broke..

I use Nikon (D200,D300) and would like something for a quick carry around. The 750 was alright so I am looking at one of the newer models in that family. But one of the things I would like is for it to be waterproof, and maybe have a little more reach. I have looked at the Olympus SW models and the 1030 looks okay but I was wondering if anyone has any other recommendations for a small "beater" P&S I can throw in my glove compartment, backpack, or my back pocket and not have to worry about it...

I don't consider it a "beater" and it's not weather resistant but we got a Canon A640 some time back - and it uses AA batteries. Which allows us to use Eneloop cells. With the low drain rate, it can be left unattended for batteries for quite a while and gets good battery life in use as well..

So while I'm not sure what to suggest on the Olympus or Pentax weather resistant cameras, I'd sure suggest something that takes AAs so the need for fairly regular battery maintenance can be reduced a lot with the latest battery technology...

Personally I'm fond of the Canon 720IS. I told a freelance writer who works for me to buy one (she had been using my Nikon L4, that I promptly loaned out to someone else..

For "beater" cameras, I'm fond of the @$100 point and shoots. At this point, they're all the same. I prefer Nikons but I believe the Canons are better..

If you're heart's sold on waterproof, then the Olympus is the only game in town. I actually own a 790SW for just that reason..

The new Olympus might even survive the "back pocket" test. (I had a friend who did that with his cell phones and couldn't understand why they always broke.) To be honest, I haven't used my Olympus enough to form a solid opinion about it..

'Nice pen, bet you write good stories with it.'..

Good point on the AA batteries. I have had times when my canon was out of juice. I'll look at the A640...

Whoa just looked at the 640 and 650. Too big to fit in the pocket. Like the idea of using AA's still though...

Thanks, still looking like the Olympus is in the lead so far. How are the pics? It seems to me once you get to the sensor size of P&S cameras they all look pretty much the same. I could be wrong of course because I really only have used a couple of these...
