I suggest that you start with a general purpose medium range zoom lens. If your 400D came with the kit lens, the 17-55 non-IS (see below), try that out to see what focal lengths are useful and whether you need additional lenses..

If you didn't get a lens with the 400D, consider the new 17-55 f4.5-5.6 IS which is much better optically than the 17-55 non-IS. An alternative would be the Canon 17-85 IS which has a slightly more useful focal length range, or the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the Sigma 18-50 f2.8..

Lens prices don't vary much in the UK (except Jessops) but you can check out http://www.warehouseexpress.com/Home/default.aspx to get a good idea of current prices..

No. Only those ones marked IS have image stabilisation. Note that IS is more important at longer focal lengths, which is why I have recommended the Tamron and Sigma non-IS lenses..

Note also there there is a Canon SLR Lens forum which is a better place than this forum to ask Canon lens questions.Chris R..

Thanks for your response...i would ideally like just the one lens,if I could get it, it would save space for one thing!.as regards price..... all I can say is..i know it won't be cheap!!..

Sigma makes a 18-200 which is quite wide through to quite telephoto. Unfortunately the more extreme the range a lens covers the harder it is for the lens to give you good image quality. Which is why fixed focal length lenses used to be so popular, they're optimised for one length..

He's talking about the 18-55 IS not 17-55. The non IS 18-55 probably came with your camera. It's ok, but not considered very good. Canon's 17-55 f2.8 IS USM is a much more expensive lens at around $1000. The 17-55 is a great lens, but has never been a kit lens..

For landscape and panorama, you might consider the excellent Canon 10-22 superwide. It's a superb lens..

For closeups, Canon's 100 f2.8 is great or better yet, Tamron's 90 f2.8 macro is cheaper and considered better optically...

Well I would agree the Sigma 18-200 OS would be a good choice. There is always trade offs in using a lens with such extreme range, but no the less great pictures can still be had.Benhttp://www.b3nbrooks.com/blog/..
