lens nomenclature
I've been seeing all different type of "lens names" out there and i'm wondering what they all mean. is there one single resource/webpage that can give me this information?.

Example: several sony dslr lenses have the letter "g" after the aperature value. what does that stand for?!?! I can't find that info anywhere! most of the 3rd party manufacturers are the same way. the tamron & sigma sites use lots of letters after their lenses, but they actually tell you what they stand for. are these names consistant accross all manufacturers (meaning is a sony "g" lens the same as a sigma "g" lens)???.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!.

Can't help you the "g" on Sony lens...But Tamron's are this.

AF = Auto FocusSP = Sharp PerformerDi = Digitally Integrated DesignXR = Extra Refractive Index GlassLD = Low Dispersion GlassASL = =Aspherical LensAD = Anomalous Dispersion LensDi-II = Lenses for Digital SLR Cameras OnlyVC = Vibration CompensationIF = Internal Focusing.

See Link. At bottom of Page

All Manufacturers will have Different initials for some types of lens's... Example....ASPH or ASL are the same TYPE of lens shape. And is Man Made..

Some are Universal Like,.....IF, LD,....And Most will use ASPH over ASL.

Hope this helps some with those miysterious letters...I have a Tamron......SP, AF, Di, XR, LD, ASL, IF Lens (the 28-75 f/2.8).

Letter codes are not the same from maker to maker..

As has been said, lens codes / nomenclature vary between manufacturers - although there is some overlap..

The "G" designation might be one of those overlaps. Here is what it means on a Nikon lens - I THINK it MIGHT mean the same on other brands:.

A G type lens does not have an aperture ring and therefore it needs to be used on camera with Command dial control of apertures (or in an exposure mode where aperture is set automatically)..

G came from Minolta world. Only exceptional Minolta quality lenses were marked by G. (professional G-Series)..

Like Minolta - AF 35 F1.4 G RS that costs around 1K for used on ebay.

That was kind of what I figured. my "mentor" at the camera shoppe was showing me a sony - 35mm f/1.4 G-Series lens and said the g series had extremely fast/quiet focus and high quality glass..

So, i'm going to have to eventually learn massive amounts of "model tags" to be able to communicate exactly what i'm looking for in a lens?thanks SO much for the responses, everyone...
