Lens cleaning fluid
I picked up a little bottle of Promaster cleaning fluid. Is this stuff (or any "professional" lens cleaner) really any different than Windex? It smells the exact same...

I don't use any lens cleaning fluid on any of my lenses or filters any more, I just breathe out over it and wipe with a lens cleaning tissue..

I use Eclipse Solution. It's 100% methanol. I use it with pec-pads and it cleans up really well. Most of the time, I don't have to bother with the wet-method though because I just use a Lens Pen..

Whether you agree with it or not; when I say something, I'm expressing *my* opinion. If you agree, then great. If you don't, fine...

Had to use ajax on a weekend, the lens looked fogged and had nasty streaks regardless of how many goes I had with the ajax (supposed to be "streak free glass expert"). No more photos....Inca cleaning fluid on monday > clean lens and back in business..

I'll make sure I have some cleaning fluid around after this...

For routine cleaning of dust, etc: high grade 100% methanol or isopropyl alcohol. both can be had for cheap if you get it from a general supply and not marketed for a specific use like "camera lens cleaning fluid" .

For bigger problems like greasy, oily, fingerprints, etc: high grade acetone (NOT from walmart) or just mild soap and water (unscented, uncolored, plain soap)..

Windex has ammonia, I'd be wary of cleaning a lens with that because it might negatively affect the lens coating..

I don't know if it can harm lens coatings, but I do know that ammonia (even the fumes) is corrosive to electronics, especially switch contacts.Joel Orlinsky.

PhotonFiend,.

Acetone is one heck of a powerful organic solvent that will disolve many plastics. Are you sure that Acetone is safe to use on a camera lens?.

Kevin..

You are correct..

It is safe to use on lenses with coatings and will be most effective at removing fingerprints,or other nasty encounters. perhaps camel spit, bird dung, etc  such organics can actually damage coatings and if not cleaned properly can just be smeared all over the lens causing more damage.

Acetone WILL DAMAGE PLASTIC, but is most effective at cleaning organics from a lens. use it cautiously, but dont be afraid to use it if needed...
