last comparison, I promise...D80 or XSi
Okay...thanks mostly to this forum I have definitely narrowed it down to one of two cameras, either the Nikon D80 or the Canon XSi. I handled both in the store today and liked both, and I have read about both online and like what I read about both. So, for those of you that have actually owned a dSLR before LOL...duke it out, which one would you prefer? Also, what about Nikon vs Canon lenses in price and quality for when I get to the point of wanting more than the kit lens?..

Seems like you want others to make the decision for you. I'm not an expert, but I don't think there is much to choose between Canon and Nikon. Both have some very good lens lineups..

If you are going with the kit lens(es), then one possible criterion to choose between the two is to consider your shooting preferences, i.e., whether you prefer landscapes, macro, portraits, wildlife, etc. Accordingly, consider the lenses that you would want in future. Both Canon and Nikon will offer very good options, so you can simply take the cheaper route..

Having said that, really, don't waste much time thinking about it. It's not worth it. Both are terrific cameras. Just go for the one that feels better in your hands and whose controls etc seem more intuitive. You won't regret it..

No, I just want opinions from people that have camera experience. I've never owned a dSLR before and am a rank beginner. Maybe I am over-thinking it, but I just want to make the most informed and best decision I can. I will be using my new camera for a very very long time. At least I have it down to two ..

Yes, you are over-thinking it, but that is better than not-thinking it. As has been said, both are excellent cameras and, objectively, it really does not matter which you choose. The corollary of that is that you can (should) be influenced by gut-feelings..

I bought the D80 rather than the then-equivalent Canon for four reasons, two of them irrational and none the worse for that:.

- I had a Canon film SLR for years which worked really well and I still have it's photographs on the wall, but for reasons I don't understand I never really had an emotional connection with it. The first time I picked up the D80 I thought "let's go"..

- How humiliating is it to own a camera called a "Digital Rebel"? And the 1000D is called a "Digital Kiss"! Vomit..

- The D80 had better ergonomics for me..

- The D80 had better battery life, which is important to me..

Another thing, that may or may not be a major consideration for you, is that most people agree that Nikon's flash system is better..

The D80 has better ergonomics. more buttons and dials on the camera to make quick adjustments and it's not so menu driven. also you get a top-panel display. the back lcd screens can get hard to read in bright sunlight..

Of course, if you're mainly going to point-and-shoot in auto, this may not be relevant..

They're both capable cameras and you can't go wrong...

I like XSi due to improved resolution while still keeping the noise in check..

But then I like Pentax K200D more with it's good kit lens and in-body VR. It has top LCD too. Dust proof, water resistant body. New 18-250mm lens is good..

Unfortunately that new Pentax lens is a Tamron, and not the best in the world. Hopefully, Pentax will again begin to make more of their own lenses and will climb back to where they belong as a top glass company. Until then, I'd be careful..

The XSi finally got a 4% spot meter that the XTi doesn't have. I personally can't imagine not having a spot meter. I can do without a lot of features, but not that..

The XSi retains a penta-mirror instead of an all glass pentaprism. To me, a bright accurate viewfinder is a serious feature. It's what SLR photography is all about. The D80 has a real glass pentaprism. Other than that the XSi has a good feature set and ticks more boxes. Whether those are important are up to you.

That said, I wouldn't even consider the XSi if I were looking at Canon. At slightly more than $900, you can be looking at the wonderful Canon 40D. You get all the features plus a pentaprism and magnesium body. Now you're ticking the boxes that matter..

IMO, Nikon has better glass. Like Olympus, there are just no real stinkers much in their collection. Canon tends to have a few in their inexpensive offerings. Their L glass is expensive and great, but IMO still not optically that of Nikon..

Cheers, Craig..
