I need a lens for my 400D
Going to NYC and want a lens to fit all purpose if possible, maybe the canon macro lens 100mm would be a good one to carry around.

Any help appreciated..

You post doesn't make any sense - unless you are only interested in photographing flowers or insects, why would you walk around with a 100mm macro lens on the camera?.

Perhaps you could give us some more information, e.g. what lenses do you have already? What do you want to photograph? Why in particular do you want the 100mm macro for?Chris R..

What lens or lenses do you have now?.

If I HAD to have only one lens to walk around NYC with, it sure wouldn't be a 100mm prime..

Probably my Sigma 10-20mm, although the prospect of having to pick only ONE lens to use for such a journey is utterly depressing .

I'd prefer to use all my lenses (except maybe the 100-400mm L would be left at home unless I want some pigeon closeups!)..

Currently I have the 18-55 standard lens that was sold with the camera.

I could do with a lens that has zoom and macro on it.

Budget 350 sterling..

The 18-55 IS isn't a bad walkaround lens. What zoom focal length range are you interested in?.

True macro lenses can produce 1:1 image reproduction. The Canon 100mm Macro is one of these. AFAIK there are no true macro zoom lenses available..

Sigma makes some "macro" zoom lenses with a relatively short minimum focus distance and these can therefore reproduce at a larger size than normal, maybe 1:3 (or should that be 3:1?), but they aren't true macro lenses. However, depending on what you want to shoot, they may be adequate for your purposes..

What do you want to shoot?Chris R..

It doesn't have macro but I've found my Sigma 18-200mm DC OS lens to an excellent walk-around lens. The image stabilization is very effective. My humble photo gallery: http://ntotrr.smugmug.com.

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro Lens -.

Looking to take photos of buildligs, people in central park that kind of thing.

Cheers..

I have the Sigma 24-70mm EX DG lens. The "macro" version is the newer one. I have used this lens more than any other I have, it's a bit soft wide open like most zooms but sharpens up very nicely as you stop down..

I received today a Sigma 17-70mm DC Macro lens I won on an ebay auction. I fired off a few quick shots and I'm impressed with it. The 24-70mm EX DG is a very nice lens but perhaps you may want to consider the 17-70mm DC. It's much more compact and lighter than the 24-70mm EX but it has a wider range. With either one, I think you'd be happy. My humble photo gallery: http://ntotrr.smugmug.com.

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro Lens -looking to take photos of buildligs, people in central park that kindof thing.

It has a rather limited range and poor wide angle (38.4mm on your camera) for photos of buildings..

I'd agree with the other poster that the Sigma 1770 would be more suitable. I have this lens and it's very sharp and does near macro shooting too..
