I'm in a similar boat... I'll try to be neutral....
1.Panny has superior zoom with amazing Leica lense and no fringing on edges, (18x vs. 15x).
2. Sony would do better, and is superior in low light with better flash, with a good "night shot".
3. Panny seems to have superior user interface on screen while the sony h50 has been criticized for it's interface..
4.Similar IQ on both (Sony has more megapixels with an ever so slightly larger sensor, making iq equal).
5. Sony has 3' screen with a tilting TFD, easily beats the Panny 207,000 pixel 2.5' LCD.
6. Sony and Panny have an electronic optical viewfinder which works very well when bright sunlight washes out the LCD screen, sony doesn't.7. Panny is faster, and is would be better for consecutive back to back shots.8. Panny has superior wide angle zoom of 28mm vs 31mm9. Sony is a bit more expensive.
Final thoughts~ I'm in a similar situation as you. If you want a superior iq zoom for distant shots with no blemishes/fringing and a bit wider shot then the fz18 is for you. On the other hand, if you do many night shots/ love a tilting tfd, the sony is for you. I'm also looking at the g9, and am at a loss for making a decision.....
The specs on these two cameras are very close ... with an advantage in favor of the FZ18 with the superior Leica 28-504mm lens..
I have used the FZ18 ... I bought one for a family member. It's a great camera for it's price and size. I know nothing about the sony. I can't tell you which camera is better, but my guess is that you would probably be happy with either camera..
Here are two reviews done by the same company of these two cameras ....
Good luck ....
Sony is definitely better indoors in my opinion (with or without flash). for outdoor use I'd recommend the Pany because of it's wide-angle and zoom. Guess that doesn't help alot. I have neither, but used them both on occasion. I found the menu on the H50 not bad at all. The most important settings (if you are into manual-shooting too) are easily adjustable.

My Pbase is finally online:http://www.pbase.com/ed197907/..
I would not look elsewhere if a camera as good as FZ18 offers Raw mode. Sony uses excessive NR especially at higher ISOs. Purple fringing is also a problem..
Okay, I got a Sony H50 in my Amazon shopping cart but am just holdingoff a few more hours due to indecision. My other choice would be thePanasonic FZ18. Can someone tell me why I should get the Panasonicover the Sony?.
These are things I prioritize:.
- speed (taking pics of kids)- indoor shooting- video.
Best Wishes, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612Thanks for your time...
Don't know much about the Sony, mixed reviews. Took back my Panny TZ5 today and got the FZ18. I'm in love with it..
Why did you take back the TZ5? was it because of no 1cm macro/longer zoom? Or do you feel the iq wasn't up to par?..

I wanted a VF. Both my wife and I hated using the screen especially in bright sunlight. Even though this VF might not be the best, it's better than the LCD screen for me.
Here is the key to your comparison, the sony h50 vs the panny fz18...http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1033&message=28305754..
Get the Panny fz18, That is a fine little machine.Nikon D60 18-55vr & 55-200vrSB400Casio Z750..
THATS ALL??!! AN ELECTRONIC viewfinder CHANGED YOUR DECISION??!!!.
Yup. Every time I pick up a camera it goes up to my eye. I didn't like using the LCD and if I can't enjoy the camera , why keep it. I didn't say it's a lousy camera. I really enjoy using the FX18, I didn't enjoy the TZ5..
