Helpful advice: What good advice have you received?
What helpful advice have you received on taking pictures? Photographic technique? Using your camera?.

I'll start:.

Always remember to check your white balance. Your camera "remembers" it from your last session, even though you turn the camera off. Bad white balance really screws up your pictures..

Photograph a business card of the person you are taking a portait of. Don't need to fill the frame with the card just get close enough that you can match the card to the name to the frame, and get spellings right for captions..

Only if you shoot JPG..

Best advice I've ever received?.

The camera does not matter..

Rob.

Everyone, everywhere, has to do everything for a first time. There is no shame in failure, only in failure to try...

With the dawn of digital photography snap away to your hearts content you have nothing to lose but everything to gain...

If you take a bad picture, figure out why it's bad and then write what action you would need to take to correct on a sheet of paper..

This reinforces positive things you need to remember, and makes you take the time to understand why it is bad..

Now what do I do with the sheet of paper that is full of "Keep the sky out of the frame on gloomy days unless it is part of the scene." and "Remember to check the ISO setting before you start shooting."?..

1. Photography is done 50% in a camera and 50% in an editor.2. Ignore fan boys.3. Spend more on lenses than bodies.4. Pre-focus (half-press) 100% of the time.5. Ignore what anyone working for BB says.6.

Buy the biggest sensor (physical size) that you can afford.8. Buy the fewest pixels you can put up with.9. Walk away when a stranger asks anything about MP.10. Break a few "rules" if you want to make great pix..

Use the AF-ON button on the back of the D2x for AF, not half-pressing the shutter..

Took me a few weeks to get used to, but by now I am slapping myself on the head realising I could have done that in the F5 days even...

Thanks!..

For everything except landscapes, the cloudy days are the BEST for photography. There's nothing like bright cloudiness for natural lighting.Carter..

I agree: whenever I hand a camera to someone else, I always say ....

Press halfway to focus, then all the way to shoot..

This is why Portland OR (in my opinion) is a photographer's dream!..

What are fan boys?.

People, of either gender, who think that the brand they bought is the only correct choice..

What are BB?.

Best Buy...but they are a generic stand-in for all similar stores that don't have a clue..

I'll give you better advice: set-up your camera to reset to AWB when you turn camera off  That saved me a lot of times..

Why?.

I find that way much more convenient to focus-recompose (don't need to keep sutter button half pressed, don't need to refocus when I take a few differently composed pictures of the same object) also I find it much more convenient to use in continuous focus mode..

The best advice I ever got was "never show anyone all the pictures you took" aka the vacation slideshow syndrom. I took 900 pictures in Italy and Spain, and once I trimmed the "showable" pictures from 50 down to about 15, everyone thought I was a better photographer, even though the actual photos hadn't changed a bit.David..

I'm just received my first dSLR a few days ago, so I'm not quite ready to doll out sage wisdom. But I had heard one thing that has really helped me learn thus far:.

Take a picture with auto-settings. Then change to manual with the same settings and experiement by changing the settings up and down to see their effect on the images..

And yes, Portland, OR is a great place for photography!!..
