Recently Sony has announced their new HD-handycam and my question is.

Is "Handycam" is a trademark name belonging to Sony?.

I just checked few whois around Handycam domain name and I found out that..

Handycam.com was regged by someone from UK.

Handycam.net was also not regged by Sony....it will forward to buydomains.com ?

Go to uspto.gov, then to trademarks, then to trademark search. You will find your answer there (at least for US trademarks)...

Thank you for your reply,i just checked 'handycam' term and yeah it belong to Sony... Trademark.

But,how can those 2 registrants use 'Handycam' in their domain name? I'm curious because i'm planning to buy few domain names that contain 'handycam' word....

It's legal to them to register those domain name?..

If "HandyCam" is TM'ed, it is TM'ed. You would be (potentially) infringing on Sony's TM if you register any domain that contained the word(s) "HandyCam." When I say "potentially," it depends on your usage of the domain name...

Handycam.com does not infringe any TM issues, because Sony's Handycam is TM'd in the video recording niche. If another company came out with a product called Hamdycam, and they bought hamdycam.com hoping to get some typo traffic and profit, I'm sure that Sony's lawyers would take down that company. However, handycam.com was probably registered before Sony got Handycam TM'd, so it shows they did not purposely infringe on Sony's TM. Furthermore, handycam.com shows a blue screen... so it's not even trying to sell anything. If it sold golf clubs for whatever reason... it wouldn't infringe on Sony's TM either...

Pardon my bluntness, but are you an attorney or have you had any legal training?.

You need not purposely infringe to be infringing...

Legal? I don't see any law saying it's illegal to register this or that domain.

But I do know there's a law saying it's illegal to use (hint) a domain name to.

Infringe a trademark.

Either Sony doesn't know about those 2 domain names, or they do know but.

They just don't care...

Maybe you have some reasons there...

Here's what i've found.... anyway....it's likely that Sony don't know the existent of those domain names...so no action was taken.....

Thanks for the replies..

Obviously doesn't understand what infringing on a TM means. Is teh domain simialr or confusingly similar to the known TM? the answer is yes, it is infringing... it is the usage that is illeagl...
