Good inexpensive P&S?
I have a Finepix F30, so I'm pretty much set for now. But now my sister wants a digicam of her own. Here's the criteria:.

Inexpensive (like $130 or less)Easy to useDecent optical zoom (3x at least)Slim to fit in pocketWould be nice if it uses mini/micro SDAvailable at Best Buy (lol).

She has a currently-unused 1 gig micro SD card from her old phone, which suffered a tragic fall from the top of the Phantom's Revenge at Kennywood Park. She also has a miniSD adapter for it. So it would be nice if she could use that card, unless there are known issues using a mini/micro SD adapter or anything like that, then it's not worth bothering. (My finepix only takes XD.).

Obviously she can't get F30 quality for $130, but what's good in that range? Thanks...

Yes she can, it's called the F20...

Wow. Looks almost just like the F30! Is it newer or older? What are the differences between them (lower quality CCD perhaps?)..

No manual control, newer CCD/noise reduction (F31fd generation I think), slightly smaller battery...

Oh, it's newer and back LCD has a lower res...

An F20 + XD card is within her budget. See Amazon.com.

You can't beat this camera; it is on a par with the F30/31fd. Same lens & sensor. Lower pixel count LCD has no impact on using the camera..

The lack of "manual" control has not been a problem for me. Work-arounds abound..

I've had 4 of these cameras (1 lost, 1 always in my pocket, 1 converted to IR, 1 for the wife.)..

The F20 and subsequent Fuji models have never had the performance of the F30/F31fd. I just sold my F30 for 160 (200 new). But for the kind of money you are talking about your not gonna get something like that. Don't know what price they are in the US but you can get an F20 in the UK for about 80 so I suspect that may be possible given your budget. The F480 is a newer model, slightly smaller I belive and with a wide angle lens. They are selling here in the UK for about 90 so why not check that out?..

The F20 gives images nearly identical to the F30/F31, what are you speaking about ? It came out between those two models too, not after..

The F480 however has a smaller CCD, it's not in the same category...

Nikon's new L18 takes SD cards. No reviews on it yet though..

Thanks for the replies so far. The F20 looks nice, but I'm also looking at 2 other Fuji models which Best Buy carries, and I'm wondering how they would compare to the F20. Specifically, the J10 (8.2MP) and the Z5fd (6.3MP). I remember from my research that what matters most is the aperture/CCD, and I guess really the overall quality of the pictures, which isn't always reflected in the specs. Both of them seem similar in spec to the F20, though their max ISO is 1600. But from my experience with the F30, most of the ISO3200 shots I took come out looking like garbage, so I don't feel that is much of a loss.

Kinda pressed for time right now, gotta go. If anyone knows any reasons why either of these would be clearly inferior to the F20, let me know. I'll research them more later. Thanks...

The J10, Z10fd & Z3fd all have 1/2.5" sensors. Less than half the area of the F20's 1/1.6". Expect commensurate image quality..

You won't beat the F20 for the price..

Aha. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for, thanks. Screw Best Buy then.  Just was hoping I could use my Best Buy card, kind of crunched for cash right now, ah well... F20 it is...

Oops, the price I saw was from TheCameraProfessionals which I just found out is a scam site. Still looking to see what kind of honest prices I can get on the F20, some decent refurbished prices, but kinda wanted a new one though... sigh...

You can also try getting a f40fd, they are quite cheap, a little less nice in the noise department, but still very good..
