Good camera package
Hi!.

I'm a total newb to digital cameras but I'd like to start diggin into it. Mainly because I'm going on a trip to Tibet, Laos, Cambodia and Japan early next year, and of course I would like to take some sweet pictures maybe for freelance publishing or anything - just not these dreadful tourist pictures. Rather something aesthetic like landscapes n stuff..

So my question is what would be a good/reasonable package for me? Camera, lenses, type of SD cards etc. I would go as far as about 1000-1500$.

Thanks!..

Are you a total newb to photography? If so, you should consider a photography course or two..

If you buy expensive pots and pans, does that make you a great chef, able to cook sweet dishes, not just dreadful diner fare?.

Well, no not exactly a TOTAL newb.. I've tried experimenting with regular digi cams and know the basics of more advanced cameras! But I'm ready to give it a try and if all fails I'll just sell the bunch again^^..

There's nothing you asked that can be helped with one camera or another. With your budget and apparent needs, you won't have a problem finding a suitable camera. Go to a store and see what one works best for you..

But if you want to avoid dreadful tourist pictures, the way you can achieve that is to upgrade yourself. Buying more expensive camera gear will not help..

If you're looking for an entry level DSLR I'd recommend taking a look at the Nikon D40X. I purchased a D50 (with Nikkor 18-70 lens) several years ago when that was Nikon's entry level camera and I've been amazed at the picture quality in spite of my lack of know how. Review the Nikon D40 forum for a wealth of info on this camera and lens. I would also recommend reviewing the Canon 400D forum for info on Canon's counterpart in the entry level DSLR market which is the Rebel xti. Nikon and Canon have the lion's share of the market due at least in part to the extensive variety of lens they offer as well as third party lens that can be purchased for these systems. In terms of image quality, it pretty much comes down to the lens (and your photographic skill) and not the camera body so you should become familiar with the lens that various companies offer because from what I can see from these forums all the DSLRs can produce amazing photos in the right hands and with the right lens..

As part of your research go to the store and hold the cameras and see which one you like the feel of. For many people on these forums, the feel of the camera has been the deciding factor in choosing one camera over another...
