It sounds okay for the price if the lenses are ones you want. What I would say is that it lacks a wide-angle lens. The 28135 will behave like a 45216 on the 40D. This may not be important to you. A more typical everyday zoom for this camera would be something like a 1755 or 1785..

The lack of wide angle is a big negative. You want to start at 17 or 18mm. Also, that sounds like a kit with lots of low-quality pieces...
Thanks guy's. I really am a beginner and I don't really know anything about Digital Photography just yet. I am starting a college course in August or September so I will learn more then. I actually just read the reviews for the 75-300 USM and they were very poor. I will leave this just now. Thanks again...
I found a package deal that looks ok to me and well under budget andwas wondering if some of you could give me your opinion's please. Thedetail's are as follows.
Canon EOS 40D Camera28-135 IS Lens.
A very good lens on a film/FF camera, but not so useful on the 40D - not wide enough. Consider the 17-85 IS instead (which has the same effective focal length on the 40D as the 28-135 on a film camera). Tamron 17-50 f2.8 would be another alternative..
One of Canon's worst lenses. Ditch some other items and get the 70-300 IS instead..
2gb Compact Flash Card.
Not nearly enough. CF cards are very, very cheap. Get at least 2x4GB cards - they don't need to be very fast..
3 piece lens filter set x 2.
Don't get this until you need it - you may never need it..
Lens cleaning kitHigh speed USB Card readerExternal Hotshoe Flash.
Do you really need this right away? Don't get the Canon 220EX..
Table top and full size tripods.
Wait until you need them. IMHO cheap full size tripods are a waste of money..
Pro hard case.
Why? Wait until you need it - you may never need it..
Digital camera bag.
Yes. Get something bigger than you need so that it will still be useful when you have more equipment..
The price for this is roughly 850.00.
Not nearly enough for everything above if you go for good quality equipment. Cut down what you don't need now and get better quality for the rest..
If this is a "kit" deal I expect that they are including some junk to make it look good. Be particularly wary of the flash, tripods and hard case/camera bag..
Spend your money on the body and lenses. Everything else can wait except for CF cards, a card reader (if you don't have one) and a camera bag of some sort.Chris R..
It is a kit. I wouldn't have thought of half of these items to be honest. I will just buy a camera body and a lens or two. I asked yesterday for suggestions as I have about 1500 to spend and I am looking for something that is not too technical for a beginner. I was also wondering whether to spend most of the budget on a camera body or lenses. I want to shoot at zoo's, dog shows as well as portraits and family pics. Any suggestions?..
I will just talk about Canon since that is what I know..
The 40D is very cheap at the moment and is very good value. I would suggest getting a medium range zoom, a longer zoom and possibly a flash unit..
Some UK dealers are selling the 17-85 IS as a kit lens with the 40D for 200-250 extra which is a very good deal. I take about 90% of my non-wildlife shots with this lens. The focal length range is very useful and it has IS..
An alternative, especially if you want a fast lens to shoot people in low light without flash, would be the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. These are about 260-280. If you want a higher quality lens with IS, the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS costs about 650..
For a telephoto zoom the best bet is the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 IS which is about 350. The next step up would be the 70-200 f4 L IS for 730 - an outstanding lens..
The Canon 50mm f1.8 prime at 70 is worth getting because it is so cheap and is a very good low light lens, if a little too long focal length to be really useful..
The Canon 430EX flash is very good at about 170..
A good rucksack style camera bag will cost you about 70-90. There are many different makes available..
I hope that this helps. Try the Canon SLR Lens forum if you want to ask more questions about lenses.Chris R..
