flash for 30D - E-TTL or TTL?
Hi there,.

Im choosing a flash gun for my 30D but the more research I do the more confused I am. I was going to purchase the Sigma EF530 Super DG which supports TTl but then when I investigated more ive found my Canon 30D is compatible with E-TTL..

Ive read up about both but can't find a clear answer- what is the actual working difference if I buy a TTL or E-TTL compatible flash?.

Sorry if this sounds silly, but my 30d is pretty new and it's my first external flash I'm buying so want to get things right..

Can anyone clear the mist?.

Thanks!.

The Sigma is actually an E-TTL flash for your 30D, just make sure you get the Canon compatible version..

The older TTL and A-TTL flashes from Canon don't work well on the 30D, if at all. The camera-flash communications are different. A manual flash will work, so will an auto-thyristor flash..

If you want the camera-flash combo to do most of the work, then E-TTL is the way to go with your camera. You will find that there is still going to be a learning curve, as flash almost never works like you think it should. Once you learn the foibles of the system, it does work very well..

What Caoedhen said. You need an E-TTL flashTTL won't work on Canon DSLRs. But the Canon EOS version of that particular flash *is* E-TTL (actually E-TTL II), so it'll work fine for you..

Maybe when you saw "TTL" you were looking at a non-Canon version of that flash?..

I thought maybe I had, but no the Canon fit definitely says TTL in the spec:.

So in summary- this isn't right for my 30D as I need to look for an E-TTL?.

Thanks,.

The lower price option definitley supports E-TTL in the spec (Sigma EF530 ST DG Flashgun - Canon Fit) but Ive read up on this flash and it's not had a very good response from users..

The sigma listing for my preferred choice- the 530 Super DG also doesnt mention E-TTLhttp://www.sigmaphoto.com/flashes/flashes_flashes_details.asp?id=3263.

Any thoughts? I'm stumped...

How familiar are you with that retailer? For a store that claims to be the best online retailer for 6 years, they have an embarrassingly low number of reviews on resellerratings.com (1 bad and 2 good)..

Chalk it up to bad translation. The Sigma 530 DG Super *is* an E-TTL II flash. It will work just fine with your 30D..

From Sigma's own website:"Equipped with New TTL Auto Flash Exposure.

EF-530 DG SUPER is designed to work with the latest TTL auto exposure systems of all popular manufacturers 35mm SLR and Digital SLR cameras.".

(I did read that but being new to this whole thing I didn't see E-TTL and made an assumption).

Thanks everyone! I am all clued up now and ready to buy my flash in confidence .

Cheers,.

If you're familiar with them, that's cool. A lot of people look to buy from fly-by-nite operations not knowing their reputation. If you've had good experience, I wouldn't worry. A sampling of 3 customers isn't statistically worthy..
