I think I'd let her pick her camera. At 16, kids pretty much know what kind of camera they want and if they have a burgeoning interest in going beyond the typical happy snaps or not..
I think taking her to the camera shop makes for a fun parent/child afternoon. And who knows, you just might trigger a latent interest in photography into a lifelong hobby or profession.STOP Global Stasis! Change is good!.
Now that you've judged the quality of my typing, take a look at my photos..http://www.photo.net/photos/GlenBarrington.

Yep we have been in a camera shop, but there was about 20 plus to choose from, I'm not up todate enough to make a choice...
I have three teenage daughters and camera style is the most important feature to them. They like ultra compact cameras. You ought to look at the Canon ixus 80 or 75 (in US sd1100, sd750). I think they would be in your price range...
Don't know if that counts, but Panasonic make nice (IMO) pink and other colors P&S (i.e. DMC-FS3P).

I have the Fuji F45fd. Solid performer, but I don't think these Fuji designs are particularly beginner friendly. Do agree on the Canon SD1100 and Panasonic FS3 (also FS5) being great picks. Just for fun also take a look at the Casio Exilim EX-Z80, Nikon Coolpix S52 and S210, and Olympus FE-340..
As the others have already said, let her make the final pick in the store. Very important to be comfortable with the main controls on any camera..

I got my own 16 year old son a Panasonic TZ1, but he is pretty much a techie geek. If your 16 year old daughter isn't that into photography but just wants something to take pictures for her MySpace page and such, then get her something small, reliable, and stylish..
Maybe something like this:.

I also raised three daughters and they normally prefer style over dynamic range!Martyhttp://flickr.com/...photos/7735239@N02/sets/72157604030772272/detail/?page=5.
Panasonic FZ7, FZ30, LX2.
