Fast shot-to-shot
My question mainly concerns the reason(s) for slow shot-to-shot speed. I have a Canon S60 and I love it, but the shot to shot speed is pretty slow. As you can imagine, it is frustrating to try to take multiple photos of a 3 year old when you are waiting for the camera to reload for the next shot. I will take a crappy shot and then think I have a great opportunity - but it passes me by while waiting for the reload!!!! Does this have to do with the memory card or with the camera? Are there cameras that have faster shot to shot speed? Is the Canon SD870 one of them?..

Compacts are not really designed to shoot multiple frames - you really need a DSLR. I'm sure the tech guys here will explain, but it's all about sensors and how they capture an image.spolky..

You may want to consider a DSLR. The little Nikon D40 is under $500 and can shoot 2 1/2 times a second. That's one of the major advantages of a DSLR and they're not that much more than a point and shoot. Canon, Pentax, Olympus also have DSLRs that aren't much more. They all have built in flash and full auto modes...

The digital SLR's are a bit out of my price range. Are there any point and shoots that will be any quicker? I don't need multiple shots per second... I just don't want to wait 3 seconds between shots...

You can usually pick up some bargains on ebay - people upgrading from a 350D to a 450D or whatever. In $US, I'd say you can get a decent DSLR that will shoot 3 fps over a 5 second period for about $250-300. Look at Nikon, Canon & Olympus as they are always bringing out new models. But with any used DSLR, ask how many shutter firings it's had - eg the life of a 350D is about 50,000, then you need an overhaul.spolky..

The SD870 is, in fact, the fastest of the Canon SD-series. And it is a little faster than the average P&S. For even more speed try a Sony, assuming you don't mind the Memory Stick requirement..
