Extended Warranty for DSLRs a must?
I just purchased a Nikon D80 w/ 18-200mm VR lens - I declined the 3 year extended warranty which is an extra $200. I have 14 days if I decide I want it. I think it's just a rip off b/c if anything is really going to go wrong with it, it's probably within the first year or probably after the warranty has expired and by then I'd probably be ready for a new camera anyways, no?.

The body already comes with a 2 year warranty and the lens with a 5 year..

The only time I buy the extended warranty is for laptops even then when your warranty is close to expiring, they don't do much to correct the problem when you bring it in...

I think you're right. I wouldn't bother..

But if you were to get an extended warranty, remember that you don't have to get it from the shop or manufacturer. Shop around. Your bank may be cheaper, or your insurance company, for instance. Search the net for the bet deal..

I am a former camera salesman. From a camera store's perspective, extended warranties are an added profit margin. Considering in my 28 year career in the photographic industry, I have only seen one camera take a dump right out of the box. I have sold everything from Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Pextax, Olympus, Chinon and medium format cameras. I also sold thousands of extended warranties on these cameras. Only a handful of the customers I sold them to ever used the warranties..

I loved selling extended warranties because if an extended warranty cost $99 for the consumer, I got $25 from that sale. One weekend in the early 1990s, I sold 78 camera bodies with extended warranties. I made $1,950 in spiffs alone! But then many of those extended warranty companies went out of business and consumers lost their investment because these companies did not have the financial back up to cover customer's warranty claims..

After this fiasco, my former companies sold only manufacturer extended warranties. Even then, out spiff was $10 for every extended warranty we sold. On a great weekend, I made about $1,000 on spiffs..

Investigate the extended warranty provider. Make sure the camera store will back up that extender warranty provider if they go out of business. Ideally, the extended warranty provider should have current liability insurance to cover the warranties in case they ever go out of business..

If you still want this extended warranty policy, I highly recommend purchasing the manufacturer's extended warranty policy...

A three year extended warranty begins when you purchase the camera..

If your camera has a manufacturer warranty of two years, the extended warranty only covers one year...

No, extended warranty it's in addition to the manufacturer warranty. this would be an additional 3 years - making it 5 years on the body and 8 years on the lens..

Look at the Best Buy web site for their warranty plans. One of them says it begins the first day of purchase...

I'm on my 3rd body, never purchased an extended warranty. I'm ahead of the game for it. The pc board in my 30D had to be replaced this past spring; cost me just over $200. Extended warranties on 3 bodies would have cost far more than that..

Never bought one for a laptop either, and so far haven't had need to take one in for service in or out of warranty..
