Hi, I'm a newbie with Medifast and have been OP for four weeks. Is it ever acceptable to replace a L&G with a Medifast meal? Example, traveling and don't have the option of preparing an OP meal or dining somewhere that I can be OP..

In general, no. If you know you will be some place (for example out in the woods camping, or flying in a plane) during the time you usually have your L&G, plan ahead and have it earlier in the day. Just so you know, though, even fast food places have meals that can be made OP. Grab a salad, grilled chicken and bottled water or diet soda, and voila! an OP meal..

No, it's really not. I would be very surprised if you dined somewhere that you couldn't get something OP. Even fast food places have relatively healthy salads these days. You could always just get a salad and carry string cheese with you when you travel (4=L). You should always try to follow the plan, regardless of your day. You really need the calories that the L&G provides..

It's not recommended at all. I find it hard you'd be someplace where you couldn't find anything to eat for L&G. I travel a lot for work and pleasure and have always managed even in odd little towns. Most restaurants will make accommodation for you if you tell the wait staff you have special dietary requirements..

To put some science into the explanation ... each Medifast meal has about ~100 calories. You get 5 in a day so you're only at 500. If you replace the L&G with another Medifast meal you're only putting yourself at 600. This is too few calories so your body will likely go into starvation mode and hold onto fat rather than burn it..

It's kind of ironic isn't it, you have to eat in order to burn fat..

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll find a way to make it work..

Good idea, rodeomom. Can you tell us where you anticipate being where you won't find any lean protein and vegetables, and where you also won't be allowed to bring your own meal? You'd be amazed at the situations many of us have found ourselves in and still managed to eat a healthy lean and green somehow. I am sure someone here will be able to help out if you tell us the circumstances you are facing..

I love the positive support everyone provides. I will be traveling soon and it isn't that the L & G isn't available, I just have to push myself to ask for the things I want - grilled or baked not fried, leave the potato off, can I add more vegetables, etc. We have to learn to speak up for what we need and not feel back about it. I know I will be fine when I travel because I have seen others do it. I have to admit that some nights I am so tired when I get home from work I just want to skip the L & G but I have learned from these boards that it will slow my progress so I make myself do the right thing. A long way of saying thanks to everyone..

You know, that's the hardest thing for most of us. I know myself and others have always hid behind our fat in fear of confrontation. The thing is, as we break away from our food dependencies and start taking control of our lives and our choices this does get easier. We're not being confrontational, we're asserting our right as a customer. There's always a nice way to request what you want and the wrong way. I prefer to talk to the server before I even give them my drink order (water, no ice).

If you couch it in the right terms, acknowledge that you'll be asking for something different, most wait staff will even help you out. One restaurant I was in, the waitress went out of her way to work with the kitchen staff to get me veggies that were OP with my plain grilled steak. They took the stuff they normally served off and replaced it with a beautiful arrangement of steamed broccoli and zucchini on a bed of greens. They even decorated a lemon wedge to squeeze on it. It was a pleasant dining experience and I've been back there a couple of times for work.
