DSLR grip comfort
I'm interested in getting my first dslr. I've done a lot of research online and have gone to the stores to try out the options. I have a lot of questions about my options but my biggest question is about comfort..

I think I have average size male hands. I find the Canon XT and Nikon D40 both uncomfortable to hold. The grips seem too small and leave my first part of my fingers bent back, especially the index poised over the shutter. The D40 is slightly better than the XT but they are both problematic..

The bigger, more expensive, bodies from Canon and Nikon are more comfortable but they are out of my price range. The Olympus 510 has a wider grip and is much more comfortable. It sounds like the Pentax entry level body could be better as well but I can't find a local store that has one I can hold. Maybe the Olympus is the way to go but I'm not sure I want to buy into that system..

I realize how a camera feel in your hand is highly subjective. But I can't help but wonder if this is a common problem men have with the small, entry level Canons and Nikons..

How important is grip comfort to you? Have you compromised on comfort for the sake of other qualities a camera might have?..

I think that how a camera feels in your hand is extremely important..

I think that you cannot do much wrong with any of the entry level DSLRs. I would suggest that you go to a local store and hold the cameras that you are interested in and then make a decision...

I think all the "entry level" SLR cameras are pretty small..

Is Sony any better? It looks like a little better grip in the A100 review to me...

Yes, it's a quite common problem.Yes, all the cheap cameras are too small for men's hands. But, they are all different, so try them all.Yes, I think it's VERY important. And I think you are wise to be concerned!.

What has gotten in to you today.throwing all sorts of attitude around here..

Ever since you got that D300 you seem to have a 'holier than thou' attitude!.

By the way.a D300 is a "cheap camera" compared to the D3..

Part of the reason I chose the Oly E-510 was for the built-in grip..

Way better than the Rebel XTi grip..

Oly doesn't make a grip for the E-510.but an after-market company does:.

They make them for a whole bunch of different DSLR's..

Gosh. That doesn't seem remotely controversial! There IS a correlation between price and size..

Oh, come on JD. I bought the D300 because I could afford it...and it was big enough to fit my hands comfortably. I can't afford the D3. But I don't go around waving the Nikon Clan flag in peoples faces. Why pick a fight?.

Putting the point back in your Oly court, some people criticize the E-3 for being too big for having a 4/3 sensor. I don't feel that way at ALL. I think it's a great size! I just think Japan, Inc is often mistaken when they build tiny consumer products..

And ALL the manufacturers do the same thing. In fact Canon is the worst...their entry level dSLR series has terrible ergonomics. Oly is much better...but the E-410/E-510 are still too small for my taste. YOMV....
