It still amazes me to this day how many people fall for these sites (no offence to you) There must be 20 such questions every week per forum..

The prices are so incredibly low you have to think something is up, why on earth are they selling them so cheap? If you look at the accessories at sites like that they have them priced at 1000% above retail prices. A 2gb "highspeed" memory card for 400 dollars you can tell it's a poorly photoshoped low speed sandisc memory card..

Of course if you do not buy their high end accessories the camera will magically be on back order for the camera you want. They also strip the boxes of manuals, batteries etc and sell poor quality lenses as upgrades. The 15 minute battery is a very popular scam.Always check resellerrattings and B&H (US) & Henrys (CDN) for price guidelines. If it is 10% or more below it's time for bells to go off.Isn't about time 20/20 or 60 minutes did a big thing on these scam companies?.

My favorite one from these guys ( or at least these "type" guys) was the ad for a Nikon D200 for like 500 bucks about a year ago. Everyone else was selling them for around $1200. I looked at what was included (it was in very small print) and it had everything...except the camera..

No I am not kidding..

Olympus E-500, Olympus E-510..

You might also inform the New York Attorney General's office. I'm not sure whether it's them or New Jersey's, but they have gone after some of these con artists...

Believing that someone would sell the same equipment at less than half the going rate and going through with the purchase is just plain greed..

A reasonable person not blinded by trying to save a few dollars would see that the offer was/is not possible..

Hopefully you've learned your lesson..

Ever been to Amazon or Newegg? Both sell stuff for less than half price at times. Don't blame the victim...

I'm not defending Broadway or attacking you're warning, just trying to add some perspective....

1> Way back I bought a camcorder from Broadway, called in the order and everything went smooth. They get an A for my transaction.. I posted a positive review on resellerratings site and after a few weeks they deleted it saying it was spam. It was the only rating or post I ever made on resellerratings. Take that for what it's worth, also concider most with a good experience are not emotionally driven to tell their story like someone that feels they have been wronged..

2> Here's why I believe reseller pulled my review. I said something along these lines... Before the internet we went into Camera stores and in busy stores you may have had to take a number. You fought traffic to get to the store, you fought for a parking place and you wait in line for the next sales person to assist you. After say 20 minutes it's your turn and teh sales guy not only shows you what you think you want but sways you with a sales pitch toward the product he'll make more money on. You make up your mind and then the nice sales guy makes another pitch, "you'll need this, and this and..." You listen and he shows you the items, you make up your mind for or against and the sales guy rings you up and you've been in the store for well over an hour.

Ok so some of us still do this from time to time but more like it we all sit back in our favorite office chair and shop online. We b_tch about having to fill out a profile when ordering, they ask too many questions. Or we call the store's 800 number and b_itch about being put on hold or having to go through voicemail jail. We b_tch because they charge too much for shipping or charge us to prepare the package for shipping. Then the sales person trys to upsell or offers us other items too complement what we are already buying. That puts us through the roof and we call the business a name or two!.

Reality is the only thing that changed between the two ways of doing business is us the consumer who doesn't have to leave our home or office to shop! Think about it, when we had to venture out to buy something we put up with a lot more and were much happier. Sit at home and damn we are cranky spoiled brats. I say "we" because I see it happen at times to me as well..

Read the complaints on the resellerratings site, most all have to do with the things I mentioned here in some way. Sure they offer a great deal item to lure in customers but what business doesn't. Read the new car ads in the paper and call on the "only one at this price"! Try to get that $20 pair of shoes advertised in the insert in the paper... It goes on everyday and everyday a sales person is out there up-selling the higher priced item... Ever sign up for Cable TV, Phone service or broadband internet? My $99 tripple play is about $120 by the time the bill gets here and I have no extras added to it... The scruples of sales have always been low, what is acceptable dips lower with the passing of time.

Makes you wonder about Broadway, do they deserve the bad press? Has anyone really been ripped off by them? I got my free shipping and they added a handling charge. I offered to fax them my orig invoice from them showing a total without the handling fee and they credited me on the spot. Maybe they are on the lower end of the spectrum but if all you have to do is say "no thanks" to their offers or upsells is it a scam? Because you have to wait on hold is it bad service?.

My .02 plus sum....

...Dennis..

Your take on the instore camera salesman is BS..

Sure, there are a few who will sell you only what they make money on..

But, in the big picture, more of them will sell you what you need or want.not what they make the most profit off of!.

And I am one of them!.

What do you do for your profession?.

And have you ever thought that maybe you do the very same in your line of work that you just accused salespeople of doing?.

Think about it.before you spout off more of that BS!.

JD - chill dude, I wasn't attacking sales people I was making a comparison between in-store sales and the complaint the guy had with the phone sales trying to sell other items. You can't tell me if I want a camera you are not going to try to sell me a lens too and a bag or tripod?.

As for in store sales persons upselling I see it everyday, doesn't mean everyone does it, doesn't mean it's wrong, (you so defensive because you feel guilty?) but if you are on commision it sure helps the paycheck if you sell higher priced items....

Here's a question for you JD;.

If I came in looking for a Minolta 5D (I know they don't make them any more but say you have 2 in stock for some reason) and I want a dslr but don't have a lot of money would you sell one to me or is there a different camera you would feel is better for me?.

Next bit I have on instore sales persons... I recently bought a low end or entry level surround sound receiver. I went 3 places and the brand and model I bought was talked down as not worth my money and I was led to a different model at each store. I did some homework and found what I wanted without resistance at a 4th store and teh sales person told me he worked at two of the other stores I went too and they were encouraged to not sell the lower dollar systems by mgnt. Funny how sales people always seem to knopw what I need and try to keep me from buying what I want!...Dennis..

If you came in to my store looking for a Minolta 5D and I still had one in stock, I'd sell it to you!.

I do that every single day..

I have customers come back and stand in line waiting for me to wait on them as they know that I take care of my customers by not selling them a bunch of krap they don't want or need, but I sell them them what they want without fanboyism, or memorizing the SPIFF charts, and I show them all the different options and let them make their own choices..

There are more honorable salespeople out there than there are the type which you implied in your above post..

It's unfortunate that search doesn't work most of the time, there are numerous questions about unbelievably low prices followed by numerous replies recommending resellerratings.com..

I can recommendhttp://www.bhphotovideo.com, adorama.com, canogacamera.com, and amazon.com. Beyond that, if a price is too good to be true, well you know.....

Those are very short, very limited sale prices. Amazon and newegg are pretty reliable. I've used and would recommend either one with no question..

Scam sites such as Broadway Photo advertise unbelievable prices all the time..

This isn't at all similar to what Broadway Photo and others do. Suppose you went into Best Buy to buy the $399 Playstation 3. They might try to include an overpriced HDMI cable or extended warranty. Fine. What if, on the other hand, they took the controller and power supply out of the box and priced them separately? Or, if you declined the overpriced HDMI cable, they were suddenly out of stock? Or, when you went to pay, they charged you $700 without your approval? Or they gave you a Playstation 2 and told you it was better..

There's a difference between being pushy and being fraudulent. Read the accounts at resellerratings...

Can you say first had that is what Broadway does? I bought from them and was not swayed away from the product I selected and everything that was susposed to be in the box was there and included in the asking price. They did offer me additional accessories and the camera in several "kit" packages, I said no and that was the end of it..

I'm not trying to defend them, if they are truly ripping folks off it needs to be brought to light. The complaints on RR just don't sound like any more than rants and some are people that are not even customers... I read several pages and not one review said they did the things you say. And what kind of person calls 20 times a day for 2 weeks trying to get through anyway? Then there's the one noting the "admin's" deleting 50 good ratings, what's up with that? Same thing they did to my review calling it spam, 1 review with a valid e-mail and west coast IP, a bit of common sense and they tossed it... That's not the only time they have deleted good reviews on Broadway..

I read a lot of forum posting and everyone has a bit of a personality that comes out in their posts, reading the majority of the RR bad ratings on Broadway just all sounds the same. Maybe, just maybe the RR people have an in for Broadway, why does Broadway only have 4 complaints registered with the NY BBB in the last 12 months? B&H is very respected and has 4 in 12 months also... Isn't the BBB a respected well established consumer advocate?.

Like I said, just tring to inject some perspective into what I see seems to be a scene from an old movie where the guy is innocent but the lynch mob is blinded in their search for justice....

Gene, I started this particular post and I would like to say that I was trying to buy a D3 and the price difference was about 600 dollars, but I didn't choose to try out Broadway Photo because of greed. I chose because they had a nice looking ad in a very respectable magazine and the price was lower. I sometimes shop for an item at walmart because the item, that happens to be available at lots of other places, is cheaper at walmart. That does not mean I make my choice because of greed..

These people at Broadway are not nice. They swore at me because I was going to buy a 5000 dollar camera but not buy their 300 dollar battery that "this camera needed because the one it came with would only last for 20 minutes". After calling me an idiot for not wanting the battery, he told me that I could not talk to his manager because his attitude would be exactly the same. He told me that I wasn't a serious enough photographer to own a D3 (because I wouldn't buy his battery, or nikon's software - that was supposed to be included with the camera, according to Nikon, or any lenses from him) and that he was cancelling my order. After calling me several other very rude names, he yelled that he was cancelling my order and hung up. During this time I told the guy he needed to calm down that all I wanted was the camera body like I ordered.

I was going to tell him that his employee had called me an a__hole because I said I didn't like the way they did buisiness there. I really did nothing but try to buy a camera from these guys. I normally buy from B&H but they did not have this camera available online when I was trying to order it. So I tried out another company, big mistake. You can call me greedy but you obviously have never been treated this way by these guys.

If you are defending these guys you should back off, these guys are scam artist and I was an innocent victim. You'd do better to critisize the people who are taking advantage of consumers who don't know any better, like the guy who responded to this post that he had a great transaction with these guys..

To the guy whose defending these guys, You got ripped off you just don't know it! Because these guys don't sell unless they are ripping you off somehow! Read the many many many reviews!.

When a camera is so new that they aren't even on the shelves yet, there is no way that anyone with a price $600 less than the big boys is a legit sales retailer..

Thanks for your ?encouragement? There has been a valuable lesson learned here, don't do business with companies like Broadway Photo. The real lesson here isn't "Don't buy from Broadway Photo." It's "Don't buy from anyone not known to be reputable." The scammers change their names constantly (consider all the variations of Best Price Photo), so a black list is always going to be obsolete. Instead, look at the white list..

The white list is:bhphotovideo.comadorama.comamazon.combuydig.com.

These are the ones I have personal experience with. Maybe others can add the rest. Also, I haven't included companies like Ritz Camera that are honest, but offer uncompetitive prices...
