D80 & XSi prices
I was going to pull the trigger on the D80, but the price for the new XSi is about $50 more ( body only, Amazon). I am not committed to either family, so the XSi seems too good to be true based on the price alone. Am I missing something???..

What makes you think the Xsi is better? I have not seen any reviews. Newer yes but better - who knows? Certainly the D80 will have better viewfinder..

Actually there are several XSi reviews out there and the ones who have it seem to be generally pleased with it...

If you make the assumption that the XSI will have similar construction to the XTi, the D80 will have superior build quality...

Certainly. As posted above, the CNET review. And a user review on POTN forum..

Those two are the most thorough. Others are just users getting them saying they are pleased so far but with no actual review..

Here you go. Plenty of user "reviews" even before the camera was out the door http://www.dpreview.com/.../reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=canon_eos450dYou gotta wonder ;~PatcoA photograph is more than a bunch of pixels..

I have no doubts some of those are fake, but it HAS been available for several weeks in other places around the world. Japan being the first to have it..

It really does not matter, considering we are in the beginners forum..

If you were really serious, and had some arcane speciality, one or the other might have a feature you wanted that's missing from the other..

But as it is, they are both excelent cameras,..

As to build quality. Is the plan to kick it down the stairs? Get the Nikon..

Otherwise, the issue is moot. Take care of either one and it wil be fine. Maybe the Nikon would take more abouse, but where is the tipping point? If you don't know, then you need to be reasonable with both..

But for sure, the Canon feels very light and the Nikon feels more solid..

A deal maker/breaker might be the lens. The new Canon low-end kit lens is apparantely an improvement over the old one, including adding image stabilization..

But if budget allows, Nikon have more kit lenses to choose from..

OVerall, do you have friensds to share equipment with? Buy whatever is compatible. Otherwise, it can be a coin flip..

The Canon DSLR body that is closest to the D80 is the EOS 30D..

The XSi is like other Digital Rebels in that it lacks a pentaprism-based viewfinder and an ISO 3200 setting (or equivalent). The D80 and 30D have both of these things; the D80 also has wireless flash, and the 30D also has 5fps shooting..

One thing to consider is that the Canon EOS 30D is selling new at very attractive prices right now ($800 for the body from a reputable mail-order place: not much more than a D80, and the same price as the Digital Rebel XSi (450D)..

If you don't place too much stock in megapixel counts and don't need Live View, the 30D may be a better buy than the XSi...
