D40X Options
Its been quite long since I played around with my Canon Ixy 70. Now I plan to move to DSLR and after quite reserach (Budget constraint), I zeroed-in on Nikon D40X. Now I have two questions..

1. Which package to choose..

I) (Total: $869.99) 1 of Nikon D40x, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens.

+ 1 of Nikon Zoom Normal-Telephoto 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens for Digital Cameras ($279.95 value!).

Ii) (Total: $1449) 1 of Nikon D40x, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera (Camera Body).

+ 1 of Nikon Zoom Super Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR II Autofocus Lens.

As you can guess, I opted for package I being economy and I get 2 lenses to choose from. Secondly if I'm not wrong as per Nikon VR wont have any affect with D40X models. So I dont prefer to go for second one. Correct if I'm wrong and I should extend my wallet for option #2..

2. If you could look in to my experiments http://silango.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24, 50%-60% of my interest is Macro photography. So I believe I have to go for a decent Macro/micro lense. After couple of readings, I think Tamron is close option to Nikor lenses (which is bit expensive for me). Can you suggest any good macro lense for D40X..

The other option to go for two lense configuration is, I read a article on reverse macro to use the same lense in reverse to get macro photography..

I will make my final decision after your valuable comment...

The VR WILL work with the D40x. But consider also the 18-135 which is excellent value for money:http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_18135_3556/index.htm.

Personally I would find the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 too limiting a range..

This is more of a problem. There are presently no macro lenses that will AF on the D40x apart from the expensive Nikon Micro-Nikkor and Sigma 150/180 HSMs. So you will either have to chose a cheaplens which will manual focus or wait for Sigma to produce a more affordable Macro HSM lens which they may do soon:http://www.sigmaphoto.com/news/news.asp?nID=3356.

None of the Tamron range will presently AF as they do not have in body motors..

Hi Chris,.

As I mentioned in another thread, I was already bent on ordering the 18-200 (11X) VR lens for the D40x that I plan to get. However, I also saw this 18-135(7.5X) lens being packaged with the D40x for a whole lot less. I'm thinking it's indeed a very good compromise between reach, price and portability. For about a third of the price of the VR, I get about 70% of the reach and just 60% of the weight. I'm just worried that at 7.5X zoom, it might be difficult to take good photos, hand-held, without VR. What do you think?.

S_ilango,Sorry, I have no suggestions regarding your macro shooting preference...

Take a look at : http://www.kenrockwell.com/.

He says a lot of his old lenses are out of use since the arrival of the 18-200 vr.All-round, semi-dustremover (coz you don't need to change lenses), afforddable..

He says combination of D40 + 18-200 VR is a winner.And he's not even talking about the D40X !! )..

Greetings...

18-200, at least in the 3 lens I have compared, is considerably sharper than 18-70 and 18-135. Add to that the additional range and VRII and it's a MUCH better option IMO...

#2 by a mile now that 18-200 is reasonable and available. I can so no advantages whatsover to kit #1 other than saving a few hundred bucks...

You will need either a shutter speed of around 1/200th at 135mm to get an acceptable rate of sharp shots or a monopod. (At 18mm you would need just 1/30th).

1/200th will not be a problem in good light. Indoors with artificial light you would probably get 1/30th at ISO 1600 in most homes. (Your aperture would be f/5.6 at 135mm. At 18mm you would get f/3.5 and 1/80th which would be easy to hand hold at that wide angle) But then you could use flash..

With the money saved buying the 18-135 you could buy a monopod, an SB-600 flash and a good camera bag..

Remember VR will not stop action. You will need a faster lens or flash to do that. You need something like 1/60th- 1/100th to stop minor movement in posed portrait shots..
