D40 D40x or EOS 400D?!
Hi all, I can't make up my mind. Which one shall I choose?..

Get the D40. It has lower noise than the D40x, it is less expensive, it has Auto ISO, and, Nikon's flash system. The 400D is a good camera, but I think the D40 is better for most (especially considering the price difference). has a Nikon factory refurbished D40 kit for $399. Buy an extended warranty (less than $50) and you are set. The D40 is generally available online for around $500.

Just my $.02.....

Was in the same place months ago trying to decide .... bought the D40x off amazon (even got a price drop refund twice with in 30 days). Never looked back. Good camera and not much more than the D40. 10MP I like to crop my pictures to death...

Hi and I just bought this Camera off of ebay and I am having trouble using it and reading the info! I had a coolpix 885 before so I know I need t learn a lot especially with a SLR Camera. So far I love it but it would not take a picture outside this morning, took 1 picture and then would not take another except for 1 accidentially!! Thanks for any help You can give Me! We placed a new battery in as first time battery exhausted but still would not take!?..

Hi! I am ready to upgrade to a dslr as my 8MP digital camera frustrates me so much. It's ok for mountains and sunsets becuase they are there forever. Shutter lag is my worst enemy. So, which to buy? Nikon D40 or D40x? I'm worried that the 10MP will take so much space in my memory card. 6MP is good enough for me but are there any more good things that come with the D40X? Thanks!..

I weighed up these two and settled on the D40 for the following reasons: Smaller storage requirements Better shutter Able to sync with flash at 1/500 CheapI don't print my shots but generally display them on a 24" monitor. As big as it is, it isn't much bigger than 2MP (1920*1280). Having said that, I bought the D40 as a trainer and second camera with the intention of acquiring the D300...

Hi, Only difference between the D40 and D40X is, besides the extra 4 MP, that a D40X can shoot 3 fr/sec in burst mode and the D40 'only' 2,7 fr/sec. I think that's not a problem. What nobody talks about, but what I think does matter is the to be expected higher noise level with a D40X. Because the CCD is the same family and same size, the size per pixel is reduced at the X, so it receives less light, so I would expect considerable more noise.....

The d40x has much more highlight headroom than the d40...

"I can't make up my mind. Which one shall I choose?.

For example:.

-Do I really need 10MP? Ithink 6MP should be moe than sufficient, so I can spend the extra money on extra lens(es).

-Is 9-point AF (Canon) better than 3-point?.

-Is the Nikon (motorised) lens holding me back in choosing lenses, or will every maufacturer switch to this in future?" Don't worry about whether it is 6, 8 or 10MP, all three are about the same. Worry about the AF accuracy, the availability of a good lens that you want to buy, and go rent the three cameras and see which you like best...
