Hi Trish Don't have a solution for you yet, however, a question.

I work as a mac computer consultant at SFU in Vancouver and am trying to hook a coolpix 800 to a G3 desktop, with serial cable.

So far, nothing is being recognized.

Did you do anything special to get yours up and running? thanks for the reply. Brian p.s. on my search, I'll keep a eye out for your problem.

Do you have USB? Have you though of a card reader instead of thru-put from your serial port? They make one for the SCSI port as well...

I have a G3 Powerbook and Coolpix. I simply load the CF card into the cardbus slot. It's much quicker than using a cable and I've never had a problem with it. A CF card adapter for use with the cardbus costs about $10...

I agree with Augustus. My G3 loses the port the camera is attached to and I continually get the message the Nikon View can't find the camera. I've given up using the serial cable. I've gone to a card reader for $12 that slides into the cardbus slot and I can easily transfer images from the card to the Mac. I have a question for anyone else that reads this. Using the Mac, I can't delete the images from the card because it is locked. Is this just something I will have to deal with or can I unclock the card?..

Have G3 beige 266 and Coolpix 880. I added a USB, PCI card to one of my 3 PCI slots on G3. Transfering and deleting pict. from 880 no problem. USB, PCI cards are cheap, < $30. Check with Comp USA, Club Mac etc.

Need to download the free USB drivers and ext...

I have a Power mac G4 and a Nikon coolpix 950. I have tried about everything possible to get my pics to load on this computer with absolutely no luck. I've tried a card reader and a serial cable. The card reader would only go to the point of recognizing the card but would not load. Nikon tech support was useless.

Can anyone offer any assistance?.

Do you mean you have a USB card reader? The G4s, AFAIK, don't have serial ports. Make sure you have the current USB extensions (check on and any drivers supplied by the reader mfr installed. Not sure what you mean by the card reader would recognize but not load. Do you get an icon on the screen showing your reader? Can you open it? My SanDisk USB reader acts just like an external drive, but I have to open the reader icon, then an icon for the CF card labelled "Nikon CF" before I get to the photos...
