contax g2 user needs DSLR
I am looking to get an all around DSLR with the feel of a rangefinder, the quality of the contax images. I have a small panasonic LX2 which is great but just not the same as a bigger sensor..

I like the look of the pana L1, but seems the image quality is not on par with the glass or the price. the pentax k10d seems nice with seals and body design. canon seems to be the cleanest image but seems the bodies are too plasticy in the lower price range.any suggestion? thank you!..

I've been using a Pentax K10D for the past year and can highly recommend it. It is exceptional value at the price. More expensive but worth looking at if you can afford the extra is the newer K20D.

As to Canons producing clearer images:.

1. In terms of JPEG, canon apply more sharpening. You can achieve the same results with the K10 by setting the colour tone to 'vivid' and increasing the default sharpening a notch..

2. If you shoot in raw (always recommended) there will be little to choose between the two.

3. With all cameras, the quality of the lens will make a significant difference..

If you're interested in how your camera looks, the ones you mention will be fine, though the L1 is out of date now. But if you're more interested in how the photos look, you'll probably soon get over the more utilitarian Canon, or the slightly less utilitarian Nikon range. I have a Canon 400D (XTi) and have grown to love it's rugged no-nonsense appearance..

Having said that, the differences are small and Pentax SLRs are very good, as indeed are Olympus SLRs, even. The Olympus E420 is a very cute, retro SLR. Sure the ultimate image quality isn't quite as good as something from Nikon or Canon, but check the reviews - they may be good enough for you if you want a camera that looks and feels different.Androohttp://Androo.smugmug.com..

Thank you for your responses..

Yes I mostly would shoot RAW so jpg issues are not important. from what I have read so far I guess e cheaper body and a great lens is the way to go, question remains, which is more durable, and handy. I guess those small olympus baby DSLR are interesting...

Correct - by the best lens you can afford. In terms of durability, I think the votes would have to go to the Pentax with it's weather sealing......but I wouldn't decribe it as 'handy'. It is quite a bit heavier than offerings from Canon, Nikon or Olympus. You need to go to your local camera store and try them for yourself.

I think I trade the size for durability any day, the only thing I am really not sure about in terms of pentax is the sensor, I guess generally canon is the leader there but has shortcomings other places. the olympus sensor just seems too much of a trade off despite the interesting size, I had the c-8080 sometime back and the build quality was not bad at all. tough choices, thanx for your thoughts...

Spend a little time in the Oly forum as there are e420 owners who would be happy to discuss the pros/cons of that camera..

The sensor gives up higher ISO to canon, that's it. add to that the excellent range of Oly lenses and I'd argue it's the better way to go if you like the size that much and don't live/die with high ISO shooting day in/out..

2 lenses, the 12-60 & the 50-200 can cover an effective range of 24-400mm very sharply. no one else can say that... the lenses are the reason to go Oly more than any other aspect in a lot of regards..

With each new body the 4/3rd sensor keeps getting better for higher ISO, will it catch up, probably not, is it a very effective tool, absolutely...
