I just got off the phone with GoDaddy and the rep told me I should consolidate my domains so they all expire on the same day..

The cost is .75c per month so the price averages out to be the same..

Have any of you done this or advise against it? It seems to be a good idea..

Would you have to do this every time you register new domains? I have been averaging out at least 5 registrations a week lately...

Is that .75c per month (per domain??) on top of the domain cost of $8 a year or whatever it is at right now?.

If that's the case then it sounds like a ripoff..

No it's not on top of the regular fee..

I'm not sure, sorry. I'll try to find out more for you when I call them again (should be soon)..

Haha...It's just another way for them to squeeze every penny they can out of people. You don't need to do that...

Yeah, I agree... GoDaddy gets rich off of these schemes and people buy into them. I hate how they charge so much extra for private domain registration. That should be a free service!.

UPDATE: I emailed GoDaddy's customer service and they told me they have no plans to make private domain registration free in the near future. I trust GoDaddy with my domains but I would like them to offer the same services as other registrar companies at comparable rates. *sigh* Oh well, my rant is done...

Yeah it's free for 1 year, I use namecheap I dislike godaddy...

I have been using iPower.com for my domain registrations lately - they give free whois privacy for life. But their interface sucks, I wish I could manage all of my domains from the same screen...

I dealt with them a few years back..

The sites I was hosting were down often and the email didnt work half the time, I wouldnt trust them with anything..

I hate godaddy's cluttered interface but as a domain registrar they're pretty good..

Hmm, well I'm hosting with Dreamhost. I don't think the registrar would have anything to do with downtime/email not working...? Ah, unless you were hosted with the same company that does your domain registrations..

Which has also led to some thinking.... wouldn't it be possible to skip the middleman (GoDaddy, NameCheap, iPower, etc.) and buy directly from iCANN? Errr, or is that where those registrar buy their domains? Please fill me in on the gap, why or why not this would be possible. I am guessing it is much much MUCH cheaper to buy in bulk for these registrar companies so that is how they can afford to do it... and make profit with their millions of customers..

But where *do* these big companeis buy their domains from? Do they just create them out of thin air?..

Yes, you have to be a registrar to buy from ICANN... which requires like a $600k deposit, or something of the sort...

Holy crap! haha, okay that's a big investment for power companies then hey Jon, you looking into it?..

You can get a reseller account from enom. Namecheap is an enom reseller, they don't go directly through ICANN. You can also get a wholesale account at moniker. I have one there - $6.95 .com's , $5.49 .net's ,etc...

Only get one if you buy a lot of domains though, you have to pay upfront...

IPower still looks to be the cheapest I have found... $6.50 right now..

I consolidated my domains a while back. Consolidate them all to a mid to late janurary timeframe. Then you can drop the sorry performers when the new year starts. It makes the timing good for tax seasons so you don't have to buy/renew domains at the end of the year just to see if they'll perform for the Christmas season...

What do you mean by same level? Please clarify.....

Btw you can get a wholesale account on registerfly without paying anything upfront and/or any fees!!!.

But dont know how good they are... so far I use only godaddy..
