Compact P&S Advice Needed
Looking for a compact P&S for my brother. He wants to use it primarily for when he's out with his friends (read in the bar), so I'm thinking something very compact with at least decent low-light capability. So here are my general requirements:.

1) Compact (fits in a pocket easily)2) Can shoot decently in low-light (flash ok)3) Fast shutter and flash recovery4) As much optical zoom as possible (but I know the form limits this)5) Tough and durable.

Your recommendations are much appreciated..

I'd recommend one of the Canon Powershot cameras. I have an SD400, which is my "take anywhere" camera. It fits in a shirt pocket and takes great photos. Enlargements of 11 x 14 look excellent...

Fuji Z100fd, 5x zoom with I.S..

Fuji F40fd. Best low light performer, quick focusing and flash recycle, sharp 3x zoom.Pentax A30.

Thanks for the replies. How do these recs change if the low-light requirement is no longer an issue?..

You mean sluggish flash recycle?.

Then Any of Canon compacts will be good enough along with the two Fujis. A720, A650, A570, SX100IS. Ultra-compacts - SD950, SD870, SD1000.Nikon S700, S510.

Canon & Nikon have better noise reduction processing than other brands at higher ISOs (except Fuji's).Decide about zoom, price, size requirements and choose..

If low light is out? Panasonic TZ3. Small enough camera, has a 10X (28-280mm) equivalent zoom, the most effective IS system going, and has good image quality at low ISO. Very versatile, as long as you are not trying to shoot flashless in poor lighting...

Check out the F30/31/20 is you can..

1) Compact (fits in a pocket easily).

- check.

2) Can shoot decently in low-light (flash ok).

- check.

3) Fast shutter and flash recovery.

-on a compact ? not great at best..

4) As much optical zoom as possible (but I know the from limits this).

- Problem is that most compacts at 3x zooms, some are 4x and a few are 5x or 6x.- A710 IS might be a good choice ( 6x, IS, good all round ).

- The Pany TZ3 is a a very good zoom and possibly ideal if you're happy with flash. It is not good at low light situations where IS can't help ( like a bar or a party ), but if you're OK with flash no problem..

5) Tough and durable.

- a tough, durable compact. ?! One of the Olympus mju models ? Not keen on there general performance, but tanks by compact standards..

Your recommendations are much appreciated.

Summary - Pany TZ3, Fuji F30/31/20, Canon A710 IS, maybe an Oly mju..
