Cokin A173 - blue/yellow filter
I just received this filter. It appears that it doesn't rotate on it's own is it meant to be used with a circular polarizer?..

Hi, just tried my old one (after blowing the dust off the case)- circular polariser didn't do much,it needed a linear polariser to turn from yellow to blue. Don't know if the new ones have changed...

Do you have the Cokin holder? You put the filter in the holder, and rotate the entire filter IN the holder..

If you want to test the filter, either with a laptop or an LCD screen bring up a plain white display, and if you rotate the (entire) filter...you should see the display change colours..

Have you used Cokin filters before and have all the parts required to use them, holder, lens mount, etc...

This is all I have regarding the holder:.

It's shoes in on the tripod mount of point and shoots. It doesn't allow me to rotate I wonder if placing an a-series holder inside of this holder would do it I doubt it..

I tried using a regular circular polarizer with it. It works, but it is evident somewhat that there is a split gradient on the A173 filter. It probably looks the same, polarizer or not...

The 173 is meant to be used in a holder that rotates. It changes the color of the polarized light from the scene. You don't use it with another polarizer to get it to work. You see it changing polarized light when you rotate it in front of an LCD display, which polarizes light, as previously suggested or when you stick another polarizer in front of it (not so much if you put another polarizer behind it). I don't know why you are seeing a split gradient with it. That shouldn't be happening unless something is wrong with the filter...

I don't know how much weight the point & shoot holder can take, but what I'd try is getting a regular A-series holder (assuming your 173 is the "A" size), and get the A254 that should fit in your current filter holder and should allow you to use the standard "A" holder (or A308 which is the A254 and "A" holder combined in a kit)...note that I say "should" because I don't know the clearances in front of your current holder since I've only used the SLR versions...

It is a duo tone filter..

Switch off Auto WB otherwise the camera will try to reduce the colour..
