Choosing a DSLR - Pros and Cons
I'm just really curious, can anyone sum up the pros and cons for the various DSLR brands out there?.

I mean when deciding to take the plunge to one brand or another... it's really hard to decide, but if anyone knows why Nikon stands out, or canon, olympus, sony, pentax and fujifilm.. I assume they all have their advantages and disadvantages....

I've heard pentax is rugged... and nikon offers a huge selection of lens.. but beyond that i'm at a loss.....

Nikon and Canon are the market leaders, so have the biggest range of lenses and accessories. But that's only an advantage if you plan to spend tens of thousands on accessories..

Sony, Pentax etc are competing with cameras that have built-in image stabilisers..

All SLRs are good enough to buy. Your skill as a photographer is what will count, far more than any quality differences between the cameras..

The best advice with SLRs is to go to a store, handle the ones you can afford, and buy the one you like holding the most..

Select the make and model of car you drive? Heck, how did you choose your spouse? How did you choose your career field? I'm amazed that some people agonize over a camera and then make really serious decisions without batting an eye..

Every decision is personal to the person who is spending the money. I sat down and made a list of what I needed. I considered the uses for my camera and built my needs accordingly. Long zooms were not on my list. Wide angle lens were on my list. Smaller rather than larger was on my list.

For me, I excluded one company immediately. They made a camera that would have suited me nicely but they chose to cripple it, via software. To me, that showed a corporate ethic I found objectionable..

Another promised to be the "standard" but due to the lack of available lenses, and the price of the ones that were available, I chose to wait until it had reached the status of "standard". I think it's obvious now it will not be a standard..

Once you've gotten a camera there is an element of inertia. You have lenses and the urge to change brands carries a price. But, in all seriousness, I bought more lenses than I need and should another company come out with a really superior, for me, camera I could switch..

So, if any company is considering making a small, lightweight DSLR with a very large and bright viewfinder and virtually no noise at ISO 3200 and in-body image stabilization I would be a prospective customer..

Until then, I'll make compromises..

You left one out.Olympus!.

And, Olympus DSLR's have the only dust reduction system on the imaging sensor that actually works..

So far, Pentax, Nikon and Canon's dust reduction has proven to be ineffective..

However, they all take good photos, and as previously said, you really need to go to a store and try them all out!.

Cameras are kind of like a car..

You might love the looks of a car.but if you hate the drivers' seat, chances are you probably won't drive it!.

I think that is one of the most important advices anyone can give regarding buying the first dslr..

It has to feel comfortable in your hand and make you want to go and shoot pictures with it.....
