ACR 4.4.1 is provided in a zipped/compressed format. Did you unzip/uncompress it after you downloaded it?..
Oh dear! I don't think so..
It didn't prompt me to do anything else about unzipping. What do I need to do?.
Although something did pop up called winRar (?) and I tried but failed to download it (it shows up wrar 371 in the File Formats folder, but when I tried to reinstall it, it tells me some bits of it couldn't be loaded). Could that have something to do with it?Also, do I have to remove any old version?..

Evidently the Winrar install failed. You can either redownload it from Rarlab (http://www.rarsoft.com/). Note that Winrar is a for purchase utility. Alternatively, try to delete the Winrar download/install files. XP has a native decompression utility. Typically, in XP you would right click on the zipped folder, then select extract.
You could also download WinZip - http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm - free use for 45 days, to extract ACR..
Once decompressed, you need to rename the earlier version of Camera Raw.8bi to something like Camera Raw.8bi.OLD before moving the newer version to the same plugin folder...
It works!! I spent hours trying to figure that out last night - I can't thank you enough. I'm realising I'm going to need to advance my computer skills beyond internet shopping!!Thanks again - off to see how I get on with Elements 6.....
