Can't open RAW files in Photoshop Elements 6
I have installed a "try before you buy" version of elements 6. I can open Jpges but I can't open my Raw files. I am very new to digital photography and not very computer literate at all..

I've done a few forum searches and realised that I need to have the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw.I am using Windows XP and my camera is Eos 450d / rebel xsi..

I think I need camera raw 4.4 and I tried to download this and but it in the C drive with the recommended filepath (ending in plug ins/file formats)..

On the Help/Plug ins menu it says version 4.2. And I still can't open raw files..

I have also installed the Canon Software that, as I understand it, also converts RAw files..

I'm starting to think my trial period will be over before I can see my raw files!!.

Sorry if this is really basic, but I just don't know what to do next!..

ACR 4.4.1 is provided in a zipped/compressed format. Did you unzip/uncompress it after you downloaded it?..

Oh dear! I don't think so..

It didn't prompt me to do anything else about unzipping. What do I need to do?.

Although something did pop up called winRar (?) and I tried but failed to download it (it shows up wrar 371 in the File Formats folder, but when I tried to reinstall it, it tells me some bits of it couldn't be loaded). Could that have something to do with it?Also, do I have to remove any old version?..

Evidently the Winrar install failed. You can either redownload it from Rarlab (http://www.rarsoft.com/). Note that Winrar is a for purchase utility. Alternatively, try to delete the Winrar download/install files. XP has a native decompression utility. Typically, in XP you would right click on the zipped folder, then select extract.

You could also download WinZip - http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm - free use for 45 days, to extract ACR..

Once decompressed, you need to rename the earlier version of Camera Raw.8bi to something like Camera Raw.8bi.OLD before moving the newer version to the same plugin folder...
