Canon SD1000 and Lumix FZ8...
I know one is an ultracompact and the other is super-zoom..

My question is, from the image quality perspective, using as a point and shoot, all things being equal, which will make better pictures?.

What are your thoughts?..

Under similar lighting conditions and same focal length and Auto mode (cameras on tripods), Canon SD1000 should produce slightly better JPGs straight out of camera (less compression artefacts, lower noise, and less fringing problems). However remember that it does not have image-stabilization feature. But it's latest version SD1100IS does.Best Wishes, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612..

Not sure this would be the case. The FZ8 will likely have less purple fringing, since fringing was never a Canon strong point. The FZ8 has a very sharp lens whereas the Canon is soft in the corners. At low ISO there will be little difference in terms of noise or artifacts. More of the Canon's photos will be blurry because there's no IS. The Canon may have a small advantage if you use, or let the camera use higher ISOs..

If you can bear to carry it about, the FZ8 is a much better photographic tool and the zoom lens will give a quality to certain shots (like portraits) that the little Canon can't match..

But, it's an odd comparison to make.Androohttp://Androo.smugmug.com..

Unfortunately FZ8 is an exception. See review at imaging-resource.http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/FZ8/FZ8A4.HTM.

The FZ8 hasa very sharp lens whereas the Canon is soft in the corners..

That apparent sharpness is due to higher amount of in-camera sharpening applied by FZ8 (sharpening halos visible)..

The review on this site says: "the Leica-badged lens used on Panasonic's FZ series has always offered superb sharpness and contrast.".

Anyway, easy enough to compare test shots for both cameras..
