Canon Powershot A720 or Lumix DMC-FZ8?
I am having a lot of difficulty picking between these two cameras. I am going to Maui for my 21st birthday and am leaning toward the Lumix, however, I cannot find an underwater housing unit do to it being larger in size than the Canon. I live that the Lumix has shutter and aperture control as well as having a greater optical zoom. Canon has higher megapixels, but not by much and also has compatible underwater housing units available for it. I would really like to get the Lumix but if anyone can give me any idea why I should get the Canon instead I would greatly appreciate your advice. All in all, I would like some professional opinion.

Thank you very much...

I think I'm going to quickly try to compare these for you. Don't expect any miracles, but I am pretty knowledable on Canon (most of their "A" series are carbon copies of each other)...

Wow. These are both REALLY similar cameras, just from a technical stand point. Both have manual control, but the Lumix's 12X lens might mean that the image quality will suffer. 6X zoom should be enough, otherwise you might as well just step up to a DSLR. The extra 2 megapixels won't make a difference, except for cropping. Have you seen either one of these in store? You could get hands on experience.

It's super easy to learn and idiot-proof. I think that's where they excel. In being user-friendly...

First off, thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my post. I really appreciate it..

I looked again at the comparisons between the Canon A710, A720 and Lumix DMC-FZ8, and was a bit concerned with a few things..

Comparing the A710 and the A720, I saw little difference except for the fact that the A720 has an additional MP, however, the A720 has no aperture or shutter priority like the A710 or DMC-FZ8. I agree that the 6x optical zoom should fit my needs but was really impressed by the RAW capabilities of the Lumix as well as the better resolution for the video (848 x 480 @ 30/15 fps in 16:9)..

The concern I have about the Lumix, however, is that the focus range does not seem as good as that of both Canon A series..

Also, maximum shutter time is the same for all these cameras but the Lumix has 4x greater minimum shutter time (60 sec.). But then again, it is not as functional with AF as the Canons..

Last, but not least, I see that the Canon A710 (which is most likely one I would get out of the two Canons) does not take very good pictures in low light, as demonstrated in the sample gallery..

What are your thoughts based on these concerns? Am I worrying about certain things that maybe I shouldn't? I am new to cameras, but have been learning by reading about them a lot in the past couple of days. I am very appreciative of any professional advice that I can get. Thank you again...

Yes it does. Shutter priority is Tv mode, aperture is Av mode. But about the RAW - oh wow, I guess I didn't do enough comparing. How could I miss THAT? As well as the 16:9, it might really be better. I've said it before, and I'm saying it again. PLAY WITH THESE CAMERAS BEFORE YOU BUY (not yelling, just for emphasis).

I don't know if Staples or any other store would frown on this, but I'd do it. Ritz offered to let me have a 1 day take home test with the 400D I think, but I already knew I wanted it..

How's your shooting style? Would moving closer or further really interrupt your style? If no to either of these things, then the focusing distance would be fine. I believe the Lumix is only 2 inches away. Canon might have a super macro mode though, where you can focus up to 0cm away (yes 0!! My a620 does 1cm focusing, and if you're a frequent macro, this may REALLY help)..

Also, maximum shutter time is the same for all these cameras but the Lumix has 4x greater minimum shutter time (60 sec.). But then again, it is not as functional with AF as the Canons..

The minimum shutter time isn't really that important. Have you ever tried a 15 second exposure? That's letting in a lot of light, and if you even need more you could post process it..

Last, but not least, I see that the Canon A710 (which is most likely one I would get out of the two Canons) does not take very good pictures in low light, as demonstrated in the sample gallery..

I think you're answering your own question - go for the Lumix!.

I don't think you're worrying about anything too bad, just try to buy for what you'll really use. So many times I see people OVER buying, for numerous features and things that they'll NEVER use...

I have tried the Canon A720 a number of times and found it to be very good. I'll give the DMC-FZ8 a try when I get back to the shop. In case you purchase the A720 I included my personal file for it..
