Camera weather resistance?
Hi, I just got my first dslr camera (olympus e-520) and was just wondering what I might need to be careful about if I want to take some shots at the beach..

Obviously sand. But how about the salty air? Does it have any effect on the lenses or body?.

Also how resistant are these kinds of cameras/lenses to rain, etc?thanks..

Yes, if you don't wipe it off. If there is a lot of spray flying around you might want to use a UV filter as extra protection to avoid water entering the front of the lens..

In general only professional cameras and lenses are reasonably weatherproof, although some lower level DSLR bodies, e.g. from Pentax, have at least partial weatherproofing. If you want to check on your Olympus try the Olympus SLR forum..

Personally I would not take a non-weatherproofed DSLR+lens out of it's bag if there was a lot of spray flying around, but under more normal beach conditions I think that you just have to be sensible and wipe the camera and lens off at the end of the day. The same with rain - if the rain is light just keep the camera under your jacket in between shots, if it is heavy don't take the camera out of it's (waterproof) bag.Chris R..

Mark Dimo (search the Pentax SLR forum on this site) shoots surfers with his Pentax SLR's. I'm not as brave with the ocean + camera as he is..

It puts "low end" Pentax bodies in a different perspective..

See his blog:http://surfdoc.blogspot.com/..

This is just my opinion, but here it is. I say you take your images and not worry too much about nasty weather and spray. Be reasonable and wipe things up. Hide the camera under your shirt of poncho when it's really bad, but take the image..

Don't be overly prissy about it. Your camera has a warranty. You'll buy a new one down the road. You either bought it to be creative or you bought it for family snapshots. If the first, get the image. I see people all the time with their protective filters, body armor, lens caps, and never-ready cases.

They're gear freaks not photographers..

I had my D80 and D300 out in the Everglades last week end. It was wet, salty and humid. It rained like crazy then the sun would come out and cook us. Can you imagine, we even saw others way out in the Big Cypress Swamp a gazillion miles from nowhere with their cameras too. Everything survived just fine. No filters, no caps and no cases..

If it's windy and sand and salt spray are blowing around, I'd think twice. Either way, a small trash bag will help keep it protected when not in use...
