Camera Info Web Page (1 image)
I set up a few links to help find camera info quickly and decided it was just as easy to make the following web page of them:-.

I now use this page as a "base" for a lot of my camera info web browsing and thought it would be useful to seek additional info and perhaps it could also be useful to others. With that in mind, I'd be pleased if readers could suggest any further links to be added ie:-.

- other useful DSLR or Lens Test sites- informative DP Review threads- other photographic info sites (general or specific) etc.

I'd like to stress that I'm not doing this commercially in fact, if anyone wants a copy of the microsoft publisher document I used as a base for the website - just e-mail me via the link on the web page and they can have it foc to adjust for their own needs as necessary ie you may rather have links for your own country's prices..

Regards.....Caster.

Thanks for posting, I'm sure many will find it useful..

Of course, there are always improvements .

First, I would strip out all the extra Microsoft HTML stuff. I'm assuming you created the page with Microsoft Publisher or Word, so this may not be so easy. But, as I see it you have about 2,000 characters worth of text in the page, but the page is over 70,000 characters in size because of all the formatting..

Speaking of formatting, you're using the Times New Roman font, which is standard on Windows, but not always on a Mac. You might want to consider putting in multiple similar fonts like "Times New Roman", Times, serif..

And though the page loads it shows an error on my IE7 browser (Windows XP). I see no Javascript, so I assume the error it is flagging is the based on all the extra stuff that the Microsoft program is putting into place..

Finally, you might want to put some more retail resources, like US based stores, online stores, and certainly a link to resellerratings.com..

Again, I think it's a good post, it's just in my nature to make recommendations. I hope no offense is taken..

Mario,.

Thanks for the response + you make some very useful points. Unfortunately, the only one I could action was the inclusion of the "Resellerratings.com" site..

I produced the website in Microsoft Publisher with just normal type and hyperlinks to the websites + don't have enough knowledge as to how to strip out all the extra Microsoft HTML stuff and my Publisher version doesn't have a font option for Times serif..

I too get an IE script error message when I go in from the DP Review message link but don't get one when I copy the link in the DP Review message and paste it in the internet address bar or when I go in from the "Favourites" link on my Internet Toolbar (both methods obviously using same address) - very strange!.

Sorry to take your time but any further info as to how to get over these tech problems would be much appreciated. I don't even mind starting off from scratch again and doing it a different way if that would be better although, as I mentioned earler - it works OK for me..

Thanks again for your help.......Caster.

Microsoft products are more like products with the added ability to move your documents to the web, as opposed to other products designed specifically for the task. Unfortunately, their files tend to favor Microsft browsers because, well, they are Microsoft after all. Times and Serif are 2 different font names for the same style font, as is 'Times New Roman'. The Serif font name is the more generic name. When a browser sees these font names, it's usually smart enough to pick the closest appearing font if it doesn't have the exact font..

While there are some great free tools like CoffeeCup HTML Editor and HTMLKit, most don't allow you to edit your document in WYSIWYG format. They make you edit the HTML directly which can be a challenge for first timers. Not rocket science, but not a walk in the park either. CoffeeCup seems like a good editor, and you can upgrade to do WYSIWYG editing if you like it (30 day trial available). Personally, I use DreamWeaver for most web stuff, but it's expensive..

Strange, but I get the error if I copy and past the link in a new browser window also..

I hoped I was clear enough before: I think it works fine. I think it's a good resouce. But I do web work often, and I was a teacher for 15 years. I tend to critique things as a force of habit, in the hopes someone would be interested. If you change nothing on the site, it will still work fine. If you wanted to explore more how to make it a slick and elegant page, it takes a little effort and understanding..

I'm going out for awhile, but if you want I can try to work up another copy of the HTML for you without the extra formatting, and maybe to eliminate the error (or if you prefer try and eliminate the error and just give you a hint so you can fix it yourself..

Which version of Publisher are you using?.

Also.what are you using to upload your webpages?.

I used MS Pub 97 to do my website (have been using Publisher since Windblows 3.1 days), but the uploading software in it quit working as Microshaft stopped supporting it..

I also have MS Pub 2000, but rarely ever use it, and haven't figured out the uploading feature for it yet..

I haven't been able to upload any changes to the website in six months..

I've switched to FileZilla for uploading my photos, but not sure if it will work for uploading MS Pub web pages..

Mario,.

Thanks for info + offer of help..

Always happy for assistance but don't want to put you to too much trouble so your (what I think would be easiest for you) offer of trying to eliminate the error + giving me a hint so could fix it myself would be much appreciated..

For my purposes, I would still be happy to use Microsoft Publisher to produce/edit and upload freely to my BT webspace - maybe one day, I'll get a bit more adventurous though!.

Thanks again for help + apologies for reply delay - been away for a couple of days..

Regards......Caster.

J. D..

In answer to your questions, I'm using MS Pub 2003 - After editing I obviously save it as a Publisher file and also as an HTML file via the "Publish to the Web" option under "File". This saves it in the "Publish" folder and obviously replaces previous version if I've been updating etc..

My internet service provider (BT) then has an easy webpage upload feature for each of my 5 available users home pages which the Camera Info page is one of. At this stage I simple insert name of html file in "Publish" folder + press upload..

Hope that helps + let me know if you want any further info. Apologies for delay in replying - 2 days away!.

Hi Caster,.

I took a closer look at your HTML file, and I found the following comment inside it:following code added by server. PLEASE REMOVE.

Sure enough, if I remove the HTML that the comment tells you to remove, the error message seems to go away .

Just search your HTML for 'PLEASE REMOVE' and you should find it. If you don't see it in publisher, then when you go to the page, do 'View Source' and look for it there..
