Calculating Pixel Density for Panasonic's FZ28...
Panasonic announced the update to the fz18 super-zoom recently in the form of the fz28... It's not a ground-breaking upgrade by any stretch, but it does have a bigger sensor. However, the bigger sensor also means that Panasonic has increased the native pixel-count to 10MP....

So what I was hoping was that someone here who understands Pixel-Density better than I do & who is capable of calculating the same would be able to give me a comparison between these two cameras'..

Fz18Effective Pixels - 8.1 MillionSensor Size - 1/2.5" (CCD)Pixel Density - 32 MP/cm.

Fz28Effective Pixels - 10.1 MillionSensor Size - 1/2.33" (CCD)Pixel Density - ??.

Thanks in advance.....

I see the problem. I would have expected the pixel density to be the total number of pixels (not the effective pixels) divided by the area of the sensor. But for the FZ18 this gives 20.1 MP/sq cm, not 32. For the FZ28 this calculation gives 22.6..

Where did the figure of 32 MP/sq cm come from?.

Perhaps there is an unused area around the edge of the sensor so that the effective area is smaller than the total area.Chris R..

It's what dpreview claims in the fz18 spec sheet....

The "Total Pixels" values for these both would be -.

Fz188.3 million.

Fz2810.7 million..

Forget about pixel density.Pixel quality + density counts!Regrettably DPR doesn't mention pixel quality when they refer to pixel density.Grtz. Blanche..

I'm not sure I know what pixel quality is & how one would go about measuring it....

All I'm trying to determine is weather the increased sensor size is proportionate to the increase pixel-count or will the fz28 have bigger problems with noise (the Venus IV engine aside) than it's predecessor...

From the crude calculation that I made in my previous post I would guess that the pixel density of the FX28 is about 10% higher than the FZ18.Chris R..

If you look on the Panasonic section of the Camera Database it quotes 33MP/sq cm for the FZ28.Chris R..

I "hope" they are still figuring it out, because as of now the Pixel Density is stated as 41MP/cm which really seems too high to be true.It can't be accurate, can it?.

I mean, Panasonic wouldn't release a camera with that poor density... would they?..

I don't know what are the exact dimensions of the sensor in FZ28 but for FZ18 if it's 1/2.5" standard the total area would be 0.247825 sq. cm. So 8/0.247825 = about 32 MP/sq.cm.VictorBucuresti, Romaniahttp://s106.photobucket.com/albums/m268/victor_petcu/http://picasaweb.google.com/teodor.nitica/..

Okay, if the sensor size is accurately reported here, then the pixel density is a rather comfortably acceptable 35 MP/cm... (35.818 MP/cm to be exact).

Which is an increase of 9.57% (against the MP increment of 24.69%) which isn't exactly the ideal ratio, but is far more acceptable than the 41 MP/cm they had earlier reported...(which would have been nearly 1:1 at 25.45:24.69 or 1:1.03).

*shudders*.

Too much math!..
