Buying SLR off Ebay?
I've been looking at some kits especially the ones one ebay for the D40x that comes with the 18-200mm VR lens. It appears to me that these are reputable sellers and that I should have no problems if I ordered from ebay. I just want to know if anyone has any experience buy SLRs and lenses off ebay. The D40x with the 18-200mm lens doesn't seem to be very popular at some of the major camera webpages I went to.. any suggestions?..

I've purchased from Cameta Camera and would highly recommend their packaged deals - either via auction or Buy Now. They offer both new and refurbished systems and are a Nikon dealer. Their refurb deals are as advertised. My demo D50 package had only 169 prior shutter actuations on the body..

Before going with the auction items, research and set the highest amount you want to spend on the package as bidding fever will cause a lot to pay more than one could get at full retail. J&R is another that is an OK eBay vendor and offers packages....

With Cameta, you can call and negotiate substitutions of the lenses in the offered package with one(s) that are availble and you'd prefer... For evaluating fair pricing, check the list of reputable vendors at...http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14677.

If you're looking for used you may also want to look in here....http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/.

.....in the Buy/Sell forums located near the bottom of the list. Most members are enthusiasts or Pros who respect their equipment and sell when upgrading. I bought a 2 month old Canon XTi and non-kit lens of my choice recently in pristine condition and saved over $100..

I purchased my XTI/400D off of Ebay. I have also purchased several lens. The key is to check out the seller's feedback. Read them very carefully, especially the negative feedbacks. There will always be negative ones for even the best and most honest sellers. You can't please all of the people all the time.

Go tohttp://www.resellerratings.com and put in the sellers ebay id....that will tell you everything!.

Some resellers appear to have great ratings on Ebay but are nothing more than a scam.

Ebay feedbacks aren't very reliable anymore as there are hacker developed programs that have been developed to post fake 1000's of fake positive feedbacks..

Once you plug some of the ebay id's into resellerratings.com, you will see that some of the sellers who have 99% positive feedback on thousands of reviews are the worst sellers. Most sellers on Ebay are located in NY and use horrbile high pressure sales and bait and switch tactics..

Firstly since you are looking to buy your first DSLR, get a D40, you don't need the D40x. I had them both and the D40 is much better (and alot cheaper). Spend the money you save on a nice zoom lens..

Don't be fooled by the whole Megapixel issue. 6MP is more than enough unless you are planning on printing photos larger than 12 X 15". Camera marketing has led ppl to believe they need these larger megapixel cameras which is completely untrue. MP's are the only way to marketa DSLR camera to a comact point and shoot consumer; they couldnt use marketing saying "the D40x has great ISO noise or great auto metering", people wouldn't understand so they use Megapixel marketing instead. The D40 is more sensitive to light than the D40x and it has a faster flash sync speed. This is very important to creating good photo's.

I bought my D40 from beachcamera.com for $479 w/ shipping and a memory card. You don't need to buy on Ebay as there are better deals out there from established sellers who won't rip you off..

Hope that helps...

A 6MP DSLR is perfectly capable of much larger prints than that!.

We have a 20 x 30 enlargement hanging in our store taken with the Nikon D50 (6MP) and the 55-200mm non-VR lens jpeg straight from the camera, and it is perfectly capable of being blown up much larger!.

As you become more familiar with SLRphotography, you will find these 2 things very important..

Come on.get real..

It cracks me up to no end when people blame the marketing departments of camera makers for the megapixel race!.

Like they have any say in R&D!.

The only advantage a 6MP DSLR has over a 10MP DSLR 'might' be lower noise at higher ISO.thats it!.

Higher megapixel does have it's own distinct advantages.it is just that many who are stuck with older, smaller megapixel cameras have to say that kind of stuff so they don't feel bad about having older technology and not as much cropping capability as a higher megapixel camera..

And.faster sync speeds don't always make for better photos!.

Better photographic skills account for that..

Learning how to use shutter/flash sync speeds will allow for better photos..

Thanks for the help.. resellerratings.com did help tremendously.

Has anyone seen kits for the nikon d40 or d40x bundled with the 18-200mm VR lens? only place I have seen it is at 17photo.com..

The D40 isn't usually bundled with the VR 18 - 200mm lens....

I think you will find you have to buy it seperately..

Try going tohttp://www.resellerratings.com or epinions.com and doing a search there..

I recommend looking on buydig.com newegg.com or beachcamera.com.

Good Luck!..

Sorry, only spotted D40x with 18-55 & 55-200 vr - at digitalrev on ebay.seem to have good feedback & I didn't have a problem with them.the 18-200 seems to be bundled with D300s..

The only way you will find the 18-200VR bundled with any camera is if a retailer does it..

And those chances are unlikely as Nikon is still pretty proud of that lens and keeps a price on it to prove that point..

Nikon doesn't consider it a kit lens with any DSLR body..

Their kit lenses right now are the 18-55, 18-135 and 55-200 (VR and non-VR)..
