Book suggestions
I have been a into photography for some years now. I know the basics, but while I get better with try & error as time passes on, I think that I could improve quicker with some help. I fell that I don't want to "reinvent the wheel"..

I mainly shoot people (action, fun, portraiture), but I also enjoy other fields..

I think that I could improve most in the following areas:*Composition (Creative ideas)*Postproduction workflow (Photoshop/Lighroom)*Lightning (Outdoor, Studio, Flash).

Interesting Books that I found so far:.

From Scott Kelby (The DP Book, The CS3 Book, The Lightroom Book)From Bryan Peterson (Understanding Exposure, Beyond Portraiture)From Katrin Eismann (Restoration & Retouching, Masking & Compositing)From Lee Varis (Skin).

Which books (from those or others) do you recommend?.

Regards MattMy Gear: 450D, Kit Lens, Sigma 50 1.4 comming soon..

On composition: The Photographer's Eye, by Michael FreemanOn creative ideas: Photo Idea Index, Jim Krause.

*Postproduction workflow (Photoshop/Lighroom).

I'm holding off on buying a LR book because LR 2.0 is in beta and most of the LR books are 1.1 I don't have Photoshop so no recommendations there..

*Lightning (Outdoor, Studio, Flash).

My next book purchase will be Light: Science and Magic by Hunter and others..

From Scott Kelby (The DP Book, The CS3 Book, The Lightroom Book)From Bryan Peterson (Understanding Exposure, Beyond Portraiture).

Understanding Exposure is considered his best and I highly recommend it for it's coverage of aperture, shutter and ISO..

From Katrin Eismann (Restoration & Retouching, Masking & Compositing)From Lee Varis (Skin).

I really got a lot out of those three books. They are a permanent part of my library...

Many thanks for your comment..

Especially the light book you suggested seemed good - since I'm going to study physics, the theoretical part isn't bad either .

Concerning "Understanding Exposure": I am not sure if this book isn't to basic for my taste..

Regards, Matt..

It may be too basic, I don't know. Some experienced people have said they got something out of Peterson's book. If you have the opportunity to go to Borders or B&N, the book will almost certainly be in stock due to it's popularity. You ought to take a look at it if possible before you buy..

Eismann's books are occasionally discussed in the Retouching Forum, so try a search there..

Also, I've found the book reviews on Amazon to be helpful. (I wrote a review on Amazon for Peterson's book recently under the name "RosieG".).

One other thing that I've found interesting in regards to photography books is the accessibility of authors. Both Peterson and Fil Hunter (Light, Science and Magic) have responded to questions concerning the info in their books. If I can find the links I'll post them..

Good luck in school. Mary.

Edit: Ok, I just noticed that you are not in the U.S. Sorry...

They don't have it in book stores here, but I normally order all my books online anyway, based on amazon's reviews and options in discussion boards..

I did - Eismann's books seem to be very advanced (which is good), but since I'm not that good at photoshop, I'll try out some others as well..

Yes, I agree..

Thanks!.

Never mind .

Thanks, I looked through that discussion. I didn't have much problems with my 450D in the beginning, since the G9's controll is similar, but I have read the owners manual cover-to-cover anyway. I found some usefull extra-information there, such as to how to use the OK-Button as Flash-EC button and others..

Photographic Science also seems to be a good choice, since, as you said, you can't go very wrong with 2. It is not available in the Austrian Amazon though..

Regards, Matt..
