Bogen/Manfrotto Monopod 3016 any good?
There is a local ad:.

Model 3016 monopod with 3025 head. 3 way adjustable head. Great shape. Silver. With handle..

With this monopod and head for sale at a good price. I am mostly interested in the monopod and was wondering if this one was any good. I'm definitely a beginner, working with D50 and my biggest lens is the 70-300VR. What do you think? Oh and I'm 5'10" and I notice this one only seems to reach 5'8". How big of a deal will that be for me?..

A panhead on a monopod is a waste of money (wonder why the seller is getting rid of it?) and is pretty useless..

How much for this combo (if I may ask)?.

You can buy a brand new Bogen 680 monopod with a quick release head for under $100!.

As for height.you don't want it taller than you, plus, when you place your camera on top of it the viewfinder will be three or four inches higher than the top of the monopod..

It is usually a good idea to have it lower so that you are not standing straight up when using a monopod as it is harder to hold it steady that way..

1. While the other poster is correct that you don't necessarily need a monopod as tall as you, you may find occasions when you are on a slope, or a step, so it will be nice to get a monopod that is tall..

2. Another thing to consider is the folded size. Will it fit in your gear bag? What type of shooter are you. Do you hike somewhere, and want the monopod stored in your bag? Or, maybe the large folded size is of no concern.

3. I cannot speak to the 3025 head, it's weight capacity seems a little low..

What body/lens will you be using? Will it exceed the capacity of the 3025 (6.6 lbs or 3 KG).

There are 3 types of people in the world. Those that can count, and those that cannot.Warm regards,DOF..

I should have included that I would be getting a different head and that I'm using a D50 w/ 18-55 or 70-300mm depending on my situation. I do want something lightweight as the times I might use it is for hiking. It's only $40 so it seems like an alright deal if the monopod is worth that. There is also a Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 tripod for sale, but it's $150. Not much of a price break there. Again would be getting a different head. Is this tripod quality at all?..

The Bogen 3016 is now known as the Bogen/Manfrotto 679. I own one and I think it's a fine monopod. I've used it with pro-size/weight 35mm & med format cameras and with the 35mm systems with lenses to 600mm..

That said, I'm under 6', so your mileage may vary..

For $40, it isn't a bad deal. The 'pod will easily support the gear you list. Dump the pan head though, not of much use with a monopod..

I have a 3018, which is a slightly heavier version. It can support a Buick. The main difference between the newer (679 for yours, 681 for mine) is the screw on top. The newer versions have a dual 3/8 and 1/4 inch screw. The older versions are 1/4 inch only. That means you may have to get a 1/4"-3/8" adapter for some heads.

I use mine with a Canon 30D/17-85IS/580EXII combo, sometimes with a flash bracket as well. The 'pod doesn't care. The ball head doesn't like it when I add the bracket, but I don't use it very often. I also use the 'pod with a Sony VX-2000 video camera, with excellent results..

As another poster said... you can't go wrong with Bogen. Well, some of their new, really light stuff for P&S cameras... but we aren't talking about those..
