If you were taking blood pressure medicine, when did you get off of it, and how did your doctor decide to take you off of it? I'm 5-4, and one of my goals is to get off of it...

My DH was on bp pills. We started 8/25/2009 he was off by 12/01/09. He had lost about 50lbs at that point. He took himself off (not recommended) but when he went for his check up the doctor said your bp is perfect may be we should decrease your meds, DH said I have taken myself off 2 months ago. Our doc is pretty relaxed he just said oh good good for you...

I would imagine when to come off BP meds will be different for each person. Talk with your Dr about it and then have it monitored between Dr visits closely. I know some drug store/pharmacies offer free BP checks...

Only a doctor should change your meds.

Some can see progress at about -20lbs loss. Keep tabs on it at home and talk with your doctor as you loss the weight...

Check it a few times a week, write it down and bring the #s with you to your next Dr. appt...

Do NOT ever take yourself off BP meds!.

I reached my goal weight a few years ago with optifast, but my BP did not come down, and it stayed the same as I put the weight back on over the years. For some of us, high blood pressure is NOT related to weight gain or loss. It is very important to have discussions with your doctor throughout your weight loss. I have Kaiser for my healthcare and I go in monthly to the nurses clinic to have my BP taken, and my doctor can keep tabs on me that way. Would I like to be taking less meds? Sure, in fact my desire is to be taking the smallest dose possible, but it is more important to me to maintain heart health, and for me, right now, that means being on BP meds...

To reassure everyone, I'm not considering taking myself off of the medication. It just would be really great to not have to take it. I initially went on it because I was taking birth control, and it made my bp shoot up to a scary level. The doctor said I should continue to stay on it because of my weight...

I was on three, Amlodipine, HCTZ, and Lisinopril. About 20 pounds down, my doc stopped the Amlodipne. At 40#'s, he stopped the HCTZ (diuretic) and cut the Lisinopril from 40mg / day to 20. At this point (213#, still about 30# from goal), I find my BP all over the place. Some days it's 120/60, some days it's much higher. My guess is I'll still need something once I get the rest of the weight off, but I'll depend on the doc to tell mw what and how much...

I went to the doctor today and I'm still on bp medicine. She said my bp is perfect with the dose I'm on, so she does not want to take me off of it just yet. But, I'm on the lowest dose. I would LOVE to go off, but I don't think it's in the cards for me. Sometimes, bp is not related to weight.....I've lost 28 pounds so far, and have 5 more to go...

I was able to drop to my meds (HCT 80/25) entirely after losing 30 lbs (at 130). My doctor took me down to 1/2 doses around 140 lbs, but my blood pressure was still too low so on the next check-up I stopped taking them altogether! I'm working through transition now, and I'm going to continue to monitor my BP through maintenance to make sure it doesn't go back up if my salt intake increases..

Good luck in reducing/getting off your meds!..

My doctor reduced my medication! It was low, so I'm going on half the dose I've been on. I'm very excited!..
