Big Box Stores - Good Place To Buy?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but the search function appears to be snoozing at the moment..

Future Shop (for those who are unfamiliar, is a big box store) has this wacky deal where they'll price match merchandise and take off an additional 10% off just for good measure. I'm buying a D80 w/ 18-200mm very shortly, but Future Shop doesn't carry the lens, so I'd have to buy that separately at Henry's or something. Future Shop is a registered Nikon dealer (as per nikon.ca), so is there any reason not to take advantage of this deal? I can drop nearly $100 off the price of the body and seems almost foolish not to take advantage of it. But then I thought... I might be missing something? What do you guys think?..

Justin....

Big Box stores can indeed sometimes have the best deals..

But, the downside is they usually have a very small selection of cameras. If they carry something, they can undersell anyone since they buy in such large volume from manufacturers..

These are the pros and cons:.

- pro - good price, but maybe not the best price- pro - you get it immediately, and can inspect it- pro - usually easier to make a return- pro - if anything is wrong, you can exchange it quickly.

- pro - you never have to worry if they will ship something. You have it in your hand..

- con - you probably can find better internet prices- con - they will have a limited selection- con - you will pay sales tax.

The sale-people usually are of no help at all for a highly technical item like a dSLR camera. The good news is that you'll always have the collective wisdom of this forum and others..

In my opinion, if you do all of the research and go into the big box store to make your well informed purchase, why not do it to save money?? There will be plenty of things you might not be able to do that with so save wherever you can. What I don't recommend is bugging the brick and mortar camera stores for tons of advice and then buy from the big box stores or online sellers. I just think that is a little tacky. The store owner's or clerk's time and experience is valuable and should be appreciated..

That is just my 2 cents worth. Take it for what it's worth..

Thank you for the prompt replies everyone..

I have been researching cameras and lenses online for about a month now... I've been lurking here for at least that long without posting. I went to the Henry's Digital Photography show last month, asked some questions at the 'brand booths', felt and test drove the models I was interested in and I feel as though I'm making an informed purchasing decision..

I don't want to border hop to the States because of warranty issues. Like I said Future Shop doesn't have the selection I want for lenses, so I plan on just getting the body there and going to a specialty store for the glass..

I was just surprised that the CSR at Future Shop offered to beat Henry's price by 10%... I don't know if he actually knew what he was promising...

Inspect the item carefully(don't want someone elses return) and whatever you do NEVER buy the demo unit from a big box. The demos have filth issues.KB-..
