Best time to buy a camera
I'm looking to buy a new camera (looking at the Panasonic TZ3 and Ricoh R7) and would like to know when is the best time (ie, month) to get a new camera. I know that the PMA convention just happened and companies are announcing their new cameras. My question is, when do markdowns start happening on the old cameras? And are you more likely to see the markdowns in stores, or online (or both)?..

That's the best time to buy a new camera to ensure you will have the latest and greatest at the best price is one week before you die....

Is well in advance of when you need it - at least a month, ideally 3-6 months. Trying to learn a camera when you need it is a sure fire way to ruin your important shots..

The best time is when you want one. Other than that, you will go mad trying to time the market. Sure, there are good deals from some manufacturers around at the moment because last year's models are about to be superseded. There will be some different good deals around next month. How long do you want to wait? You could be out there taking photos, getting experience and having fun....

Best wishesMike..

Most of the previous posters are right. The one caveat is how well you can figure out using electronics. If it only takes you a week to figure out a camera, buying it several months before you need it (and having it gathering dust until you take it out the week before your trip) seems a little counter-intuitive..

Panasonic did just announce a successor to the TZ3 by the way but if you wait to see how that camera is, you may not get around to buying one until right before THAT one has a successor announced..

In general, discounts/markdowns happen every which way. A demo sample in a store may be marked down differently than what's available online. Sometimes online markdowns are offered that aren't in stores (Circuit City is notorious for this but you can buy online and pick up at your neighborhood store.).

Alright, alright, I get the picture. It usually doesn't take me too long to learn how to use a camera, at least in terms of the functions I'm most apt to use. And I definitely won't be waiting around forever...I've got a couple of trips planned already. I'll be on the lookout for a camera, and will be sure to check out retail stores' online websites (ie, Circuit City) if I can score a particularly good deal. Thanks for your advice, and wish me luck!..

AnneLise,.

Please take my post above about waiting one week before you die as a light hearted joke. I was not trying to be rude....

One thing you may want to consider to save money is to look for a factory demo or reburbished unit from Cameta Cameras. I bought my wifes D50 there as a refurbighed unit at fantastic savings and it was as good as new....

Good luck!.

If you're bent on getting a discount and have all the time in the world:.

Figure out exactly what camera you want. Locate a few reputable retailers. Check their prices every day until you're sure you know what their standard price is. Then wait for it to drop. Ask yourself if the discount is adequate..

Unless you're on a really, really tight budget this is not worthwhile. A new model will always come out soon enough that you will second-guess yourself, or you'll find a better sale a week after buying it...

There will always be a newer model/cheaper price just around the corner....and if you think like that you'll be a long time before you buy.

In short, the best time to buy is always..... NOW!.
