Best p&s for wife
I know this has been discussed quite a bit but I was wondering if you can give me some recommendations for p&s camra with a good IQ, sharpness and possible image stabilizator for my wife. She will most likely just shoot on Auto or P but the image quality is very important for her. I don't mind spending a bit more money for a good camera. I was looking at Canon G7/9 but have read that in auto mode the pictures are not that great. Same about Canon 5Si. Any other cameras you would recommend?.

No camera will produce photos in auto mode that are as 'good' as what an experinced photographer can do in manual mode. That being said, I have seen quality shots from the camera's you mentioned..

If I could make a recommendation. Go to the local camera store with an SD card ( since most P&S cameras use these) and take a few shots with each camera while you have the SD card in it. Take notes so you know which photos were ddone with which camera. Then come home and look at them on your computer ( the camera's screen is not a good way to evaluate photo qulaity). It might require a little effort but it's will give you first hand samples to look at..

Alternatively you can look at the samples from the reviews on this site..

I recently purchased the Panasonic TZ3 for my wife and she's been very happy with it if you want an alternative, but the camera's you are looking at are good choices..

SD950IS or 870IS (for wide angle). These have sharp lens, good IQ. Fuji F50fd, Nikon S700 are also good option. All these are ultra-compacts..

Among larger compacts G9 currently is the best P&S on lens sharpness, raw mode, build, handling & IQ. A650IS is also worthy option with it's swivel LCD..

I think my Canon S3 is pretty similar to the S5. It's true that in Auto mode my exposures have been off by as much as a full stop. So I almost always shoot in Program mode. This gives me easy control over exposure compensation/correction, ISO, and "shifting" through the series of aperture/shutter combinations for a given EV. If this level of "fuss" is acceptable, then I think the Canons do a fine job. If you really want the Auto mode to be enough almost all the time, that will be another search..

Buy her a Olympus MJU 800, I use one as a backup to my D80, and works very wellhttp://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympusstylus800/.

How about the camera on more compact side. Smaller then Canon S5..

LOL ... What ever makes her happy ... Both of us are pros but she just picked up a Power Shot SX100 and is very happy with it as something when she doesn't want to haul the gear.Richard Herbert, Monterey CAStandout from conformity, 'Only a dead fish swims with the current.'..

Well. She is smart and has maximized value. SX100IS is a camera with full manual modes, good quality 10x zoom lens while having compact size. Tele zoom is what a DSLR owner would love to have in a P&S for fun as for serious work (mostly wide-angle landscapes) he/she would prefer DSLR..
