You did not say whether you wanted to stay with canon lenses..
If yes then the canon 17-55f2.8 or the 17-85f4.0 would be your take anywhere do all lens. between the lenses it is achoice of extra speed for low light or extra range to get a little more telephoto...
Thank you for your answer. I have no preference as to the manufacturer of the lense. Just whatever is the best lense overall..
For indoor photography an external flash will be your best lens...

Ok, great. Anyone have any thought on this site and their deals? - http://www.digicombos.com/category_s/170.htm..

It amazes me how often people fall for these scam outfits. It amazes me how long these scam outfits can be allowed to remain open. They're like cockroaches... a little light and they scamper to a new shadow. At least people mention these URLs here, so we can shine that light..
To be plain: you'd get a box with none of the included accessories, unless you paid through the nose to get what you should have gotten in the first place..

Some popular options:.
Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS - has image stabilization and good optics, but expensive. Image Stabilization is nearly useless for the purposes you listed though..
Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 macro - good optics, cheaper.
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 - good optics, cheaper.
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4.5 - average optics, longer range, but F4.5 doesn't allow capturing fast action indoors..
Kit lens 18-55mm F5.6 and Canon 50mm F1.8 - super cheap, but poorer optics. Use the kit lens for general purpose, and the Canon 50mm F1.8 for portraits..
Canon 50mm F1.4 or 85mm F1.8 or 85mm F1.2 - if you want the wow factor on portraits, use one of these prime lenses. The large apertures (smaller fstops) make the background buttery smooth while also allowing fast shutter speed to freeze motions in low light. Optics is better than any zoom lenses above. But then these lenses can't zoom, and chances are you'll need another zoom lens for other purposes...
Re>Just whatever is the best lense overall<.
There's a reason that so many different lenses are offered for sale. Mostly it is because there is no best overall lens..
Go buy a Canon 17-55mm f2.8 lens, and learn to use it..
After a while, you'll have an idea of what second lens to buy..
About retail web sites: mostly, of the deal looks too good to be true, it is..
Thanks for the suggestions. I just ordered it with the 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6. I can't wait to get it. Once I have a chance to play with it and get use to it, I plan on getting a portrait lens, wide angle and telephoto. But that will take some time and a hell of a lot more money. I did a lot of research for the best price and feel like a found the best deal with the best ratings from us1photo.com..
Thanks for the advice. I ended up going with the 17-85 f/4.0-6.5. I didn't feel like dropping another grand after purchasing the 40D...
